As parents, especially during the initial stages, it can be challenging to balance self-care with household duties. Many couples lose track of their well-being when the strenuous task of being parents comes into the picture. It is vital that even as parents, one can find time alone frequently. A father of three kids, Cedric Thompson Jr.—who goes by @ascedbyme on TikTok—shared a video explaining why he prioritizes the same for his wife. “You should not feel guilty for having alone time,” the dad said. He then went on to mention that his wife often has alone time scheduled so she can take care of herself. As the dad explained that his wife needs his alone time, he also shared glimpses of himself handling his kids and chores while his wife is away. “What she does with her alone time is frankly none of my business,” he added.

“All I know is when she’s out having her alone time, I don’t want her to worry. I don’t want her to feel rushed. I want her to take as much time as she needs,” he elaborated. He highlighted that a parent needs to take time out and remind themselves of their identity and not get lost in the world of being a parent and spouse. “I want her to go out and do the things that she wants to do, whether it’s to just go out and debrief or to go out and do something that makes her feel good,” he pointed out. While the dad managed everything for his children, from bathing, feeding and playtime, he encouraged people to focus on their alone time.

“My biggest motto in life is you have to take care of yourself to take care of those around you. It’s the only way you can show up the best and I want my wife to put that into practice every single week,” Thompson Jr. explained. He strongly urged people to put their well-being first because that is the primary and foundational step in several aspects of life. “At the end of the day, we’re a team. My wife is my teammate. Sometimes, your teammate needs a break. When she comes back and she has to put those hats on, she can put them on in the way that she wants to, having been rejuvenated from that alone time,” the dad concluded. Sharing more in his caption, he mentioned that it may not be an easy thing to do given the humongous responsibilities of life.

“It took time for us to make this a consistent thing every week, but we took time to prioritize it,” he said. He also added that taking these breaks helps them as parents take on their challenging responsibilities the way that they want to. @luxxari.art wrote, “I literally cried. Mama needs her alone time so bad.” @dianamaccias wrote, “My husband did this for me and it changed our life. I’m a much better mom and wife now.” @clarissay85 said, “I love to hear beautiful testimony. A man that understands what women need and supports that with his kids.”

@ascedbyme

In order to show up the best you have to take care of yourself so you can take care of those around you. This is something I’ve always understood and it’s something I want my wife to implement as well. It took time for us to make this a consistent thing every week, but we found out how to prioritize it. Now that it’s a part of our weekly routine, we can see how this helps her wear all the hats she is wearing and show up in those roles how she would like to every week.
