Well, his journey began when he saw his wife, Annie, suffer from severe endometriosis pain. As time passed, her health started deteriorating, so much that she had to be bedridden for almost a year. Having no other option, Shumaker started sharing cringy childhood videos to raise money for his wife's surgery. Fortunately, the campaign did exceptionally well, and Annie got her surgery done just in time. To celebrate her recovery, Shumaker began another campaign to pay off her college funds. For months, Annie had no idea. In fact, Shumaker blocked her on Instagram to keep the surprise intact. Then, on her birthday, he unveiled the surprise of a lifetime. Shumaker's latest update, shared on July 14, 2026, has received 138,000 views on his page.
Secret behind the bee suit
For the past year, Shumaker’s wife, Annie, he explained, had been bedridden because of endometriosis pain. One night, the pain became so severe that she blacked out, and they had to rush to the hospital. This marked the beginning of an emotional and financial crisis. The couple didn’t even have money to cover Annie’s surgery, and the medical bills were constantly soaring. Helpless, Shumaker started a GoFundMe campaign about three months ago. Meanwhile, he also started sharing his childhood videos to raise money for Annie.
The campaign performed exceptionally well, and thanks to the donations, Annie had her surgery done and is now recovering well. Seeing the popularity of his content, Shumaker got another idea to make his wife happy. He decided to create lip-syncing videos behind her back and use them to pay off her $30,000 college debt as a present for her birthday, which was about a month away, on July 14. As an added precaution, to keep his campaign a secret, Shumaker blocked Annie on Instagram. This time too, his campaign went viral, especially after he started appearing in a funky bee costume. 16 days into the campaign, he had already raised $30,000. All the while, Annie thought that he had just been working a lot lately.
'Craziest birthday reveal'
In what Shumaker called the “craziest birthday reveal of all time,” he set up a room with professional lights, neat curtains, presentation space, flowers, snacks, cameras, and a sign that read “Happy Birthday.” He appeared in the same bee costume to reveal the surprise. "You are debt-free," Shumaker announced, and his wife, Annie, looked at him, speechless. "It’s unbelievable," she gasped, "I feel like I am breathing for the first time in years." Annie's voice choked with emotion as she hugged Shumaker.
Science behind sweet surprises
Shumaker’s gesture was a perfect mix of expressing love and offering a surprise — both gestures that contribute to an increased intensity of love in a relationship. In a study published in PLOS One, researchers found that expressing love increases feelings of being loved and enhances psychological well-being for both partners. Moreover, researchers concluded, "Our findings showed that the feelings of being loved can be maintained over time, and the participants who reported more enduring feelings of love also had higher levels of flourishing." Similarly, another study, published in Interpersona, documented the responses of 126 surprise receivers. In 29.4% of the cases, their partner performed something special for them, just like Shumaker. Individuals reported that surprises like these contributed to closeness (39.5%), as a catalyst for strengthening their commitment.
'In sickness and in health'
