Man demands his wife call him a pilot even though he's never flown a plane in his life

'I think it is incredibly disrespectful for her not to acknowledge my skills and training,' he said.

A man called himself a "passionate aviation enthusiast" but had never flown a plane in his life; yet he felt disrespected every time his wife refused to address him as a pilot. Originally shared on Reddit (now deleted), the story was reposted on Twitter.

The couple had been together for years, and the man couldn't remember one incident where they'd fought to the point of breakup or divorce. However, his wife not acknowledging his passion for aviation apparently made him reconsider their relationship. The man had been working as a manager for a restaurant chain, but would spend his free time on aviation-related stuff. "I have spent thousands of dollars on flight textbooks, sim gear, and even built my own 330 setup," he said. Moving on, he shared that although he had never flown a plane or started flight training, he considered himself more knowledgeable than the average pilot.

Once, the man accompanied his wife to her coworker Greg's house for a barbecue, where the actual fiasco happened. "My wife is a senior software tech for a COVID-19 startup. She has worked there since 2020, a lucky catch after she was laid off from her previous job due to the virus," the man said. During a casual interaction, Greg asked what the man did for a living, and to this, his wife said he managed a food chain. The man wasn't pleased, so he quickly intervened, saying, "I am a pilot." He said he had very much earned the title of a pilot by putting in more than 500 hours learning about it. "I think it is incredibly disrespectful for her not to acknowledge my skills and training," the man added. After publicly correcting his wife, he went on to say she was forgetful, and hence forgot about him being a pilot. The day continued with the man exchanging "nasty glances" at his wife, and as they got into their car, they started arguing.

His wife told him that he didn't deserve the title of a pilot since he had no professional training, but the man dismissed her, saying that she was being insensitive. The couple who had never fought to an extent that they questioned their relationship, were now arguing over something so simple yet bizarre. Though the topic might seem too trivial, the difference of opinion creates disturbances in the long run, leading to more frequent fights. According to a survey, 53.8% of people who have experienced separation said frequent conflict or arguments were what drove them towards divorce. In fact, one of the participants said, "We’d have an argument over something really simple, and it would turn into just huge, huge fights, and so our arguments never got better, they only ever got worse."

Meanwhile, reacting to the post, @jaketropolis joked, "He's completely justified. If my wife doesn't tell strangers I'm a city planner because I have thousands of hours in 'Cities: Skylines' and 'SimCity 4,' we're getting divorced immediately." @iragilligan said, "Imagine the awkward conversations this poor woman has to wiggle out of at work the next day. 'So your husband is a pilot AND a fast food manager? Talk about job perks!'" @mrssrpatton wrote, "LMAO! My very close friend is a retired fighter pilot. Many professional pilots have to retrain if they haven't flown in mere months. What a moron; this is like saying you read medical books and therefore you are qualified to be a doctor. She's an idiot for even tolerating him."

@erickzehr wrote, "'I still consider myself adept... better than the average pilot.' Record scratch moment right here, lol! As someone who has spent exactly 2 hours flying (and is bringing down the average considerably)… no, this man has no idea what he is talking about. But then, we all know that." Lashing out at the man, @natsfert wrote, "This is insane. Saying that her job was a lucky catch was the first red flag, but, uhh, telling her coworker that his wife is forgetful is absolutely wild. She should be fuming."
