After being stood up, a New Yorker enjoys a high-end dinner.
People date for various reasons: searching for a soulmate, seeking fun, or even aiming for a free meal. Finding someone who fully respects your time and space on a date can be a challenge. Reddit user u/andrewqr1012 shared how one date went terribly wrong. “So there was this event at a bar that I was planning to go to this weekend and I asked this guy to be my date that night as I don’t like being alone in crowded unfamiliar places. At first, he seemed quite enthusiastic as he messaged me a lot about it. One time, he casually mentioned how expensive going out in NYC has become, which is true by the way. I went, ‘No worry, I will pick up the tab and we will have a good time.’”
He then texted his date to confirm the plan. He suggested that they together could grab some food beforehand. So, he asked his supposed date what he would like to eat. He got back to him, saying that there was a sushi place in Queens that he wanted to try out. Initially, the person found it strange because the bar he had planned to go to was in the West Village, and if they went to Queens, they might not be able to reach the bar on time. “And the only reason why we are even hanging out is because I wanted to go to this bar. So, I made a logical response, suggesting we could get something else near the bar,” the Reddit user wrote.
His supposed date became unresponsive after hearing his explanation and when he asked for confirmation of the itinerary, he responded that he needed to think about it. That’s when the person realized he was taking him for a meal ticket. “He’s trying to get me to capitulate to his demands, as it’s already Friday night and I am running out of options of people still free and available, which I was. He derailed my plan,” the person wrote.
In response, he treated himself to a lavish $400 17-course omakase at a renowned village restaurant. He had an extremely good time enjoying the lavish food. Then, he posted the picture of the sushi to his Instagram stories. His supposed date messaged him later apologizing and said he got busy with family, etc. After hearing vague excuses, he decided to block him immediately.
People in the comments applauded him for making the right move. u/thrwy_111822 wrote, “It was a power play that backfired. NYC is full of sushi places, there was no reason for him to suggest somewhere that far out of the way. The only reason for him to ask for something ridiculous and then sulk about it is that he wanted to demonstrate 'it’s my way or the highway.' Well played all around.” u/nickis84 said, “Good for you. You chose the far better option. Keep him blocked.” u/heathenjesus expressed, "Wow, so the dude got asked out, didn’t have to pay and still blew it, that’s just sad."
