How long is too long to wait for someone's text? Ebony Sain (@ebonyy_monique), a woman from Houston, took to TikTok to share that her date canceled on her at the last minute because she didn't reply to his text for 8 minutes. Sain was excited to meet the man until she saw his reason and realized she just dodged a bullet. Her video, shared on July 19, has reached 1.4 million views on her page.

A date gone wrong

Sain got ready in her favorite outfit and recorded a video to share online. She told her followers how she moved to Houston to date, followed by confessing that it was a "terrible idea. I would not recommend." Sain showed her fit and abruptly ended the video, only to return and share an embarrassing update. She said her date cancelled on her because she did not reply to his text on time. Well, the man told her he was on his way to see her at 11:56 a.m., and since Sain was busy recording her video, she took 8 minutes to respond with ''Kay.''

Sain was shocked, but it was the man's justification that blew her mind specifically. Her date wrote, "I just went the opposite way, so respectfully, I will pass today. The big communication gaps are a little too ambiguous for me." She found it hilarious that he canceled the date because she took a few minutes to respond but respected his decision. Sain wrote back, "It was a 10-minute difference. But respect. Have a great day."

Although the man backed out just before the date, Sain decided to go out alone and treat herself to some good food. In an update video, she shared how she spent her weekend, enjoying her company to the fullest. "I am about to have a glass of wine and watch my favorite show with my dog. It was still a good Saturday," Sain confessed

Ghosting panic is real

With the ever-growing fear of getting ghosted in today's digital world, a study by Christiane M. Büttner and Sarah Lutz explored the concept of response delay tolerance — the amount of time a person is willing to wait for a message before feeling ignored. The research also revealed that people with a shorter delay tolerance were more likely to send a follow-up message that could be either friendly or confrontational.

Another study by Chelsea Guest and Pamara F. Chang revealed that "the delay between sending and receiving a message is something people have always interpreted with anxiety, hope, fear, boredom, or longing." It also mentioned how certain features on phones make people expect instant responses after they've been read. Sain's date could have experienced the same thing, and within a few minutes decided to cancel.

Meanwhile, netizens were saying how Monique dodged a bullet after the man's response. Some believed he was never on his way to her. @malfuncktion wrote, "He was never on the way, the f*ck. So, ew. You looked amazing though he didn’t deserve all that!" @dumebi_jenna commented, "I mean if he wanted a response and you weren’t fast enough, he could’ve called. He was already on the way, right? Sounds fishy. I don't think he was on the way for real."
