Rich Wilson was not going to let his son disrespect someone's hard work

Birthday gifts are supposed to be a source of joy, but they can quickly dim one's smile if one's expectations are too high. Rich Wilson's (@crashhefner) son just received a bunch of birthday gifts from his girlfriend. The day before, she dropped off brand new Jordans, a birthday card, and $40. Instead of thanking her for the gifts, he asked, "Why did you only put $40 in the card? What am I supposed to do with that?" When Wilson overheard his son complaining, he gave him the quickest reality check. The post was shared on August 30, 2026, and it had 27,400 likes and 2,400 comments.
Wilson was walking by his son's bedroom when he overheard him talking on the phone. He had asked his girlfriend why she gave him a meager $40. She explained that he could buy a T-shirt that would match the shoes with the money. She added, "That was literally my last $40. I've been picking up extra shifts for the past two weeks so you could have what you wanted." Instead of apologizing for his rude behavior, he laughed at her and said matter-of-factly, "Girl, as you should. You're my girlfriend."
Instead of letting it slide, Wilson barged into his son's room and made him call her back. He confronted his son's nasty behavior by asking him when the last time was he spent his hard-earned money on his girlfriend, to which he replied, "I don't know. My money has been tight." Angry with the response, Wilson said, "So your money can be tight, but she’s supposed to work extra shifts and empty her pockets to prove she loves you?"
Wilson made his son return the sneakers and the $40. His son was angry that his dad ruined his birthday and that his relationship was "none of his (dad's) business." Wilson immediately replied with, "It became my business when I realized my son was learning to measure love by how much a young woman would sacrifice while he gave nothing in return... a gift that empties somebody else’s pockets shouldn’t inflate your ego." He concluded by saying that he was trying to raise "a man," so he would not be "just minding my business."
Navigating relationships as a teenager can be confusing, and sometimes they can cross the line into disrespect. King's College London surveyed 24 countries, including the U.S., to study parenting priorities in 2023. The study found that the U.S. was the last country on the list to value "good manners" in their children (52%), while Egypt took first place (96%). Additionally, when it came to "tolerance and respect for other people," the U.S. took 11th place (76%), while Sweden took the win (93%).
Parents poured in the comment section with their own stories of how they kept their sons and daughters in check while dealing with their relationships. @agirue wrote, "We’ve got a problem with young guys watching those idiot podcast bros who give the worst advice about dating. They tell boys to do the exact opposite of what they should be doing. It’s maddening." @nantuckethousewife added, "Sounds like he ruined his own birthday and relationship because he acted entitled. Good on you for parenting."
