'His sacrifice finally had a name: Doctor,' the young man said.

Behind every dream we chase, there’s passion, there’s hard work, and there are silent struggles that no one sees. However, some people stand as our pillars of support and help us accomplish our dreams. Without them, success would probably never feel the same. For resident doctor Kam, who practices internal medicine, these people were his parents. So when he got into medical school after significant challenges, he had to break the news to them. In the video shared on his Facebook page, the man sat across from his father before revealing that he had finally made it to medical school. His silent yet powerful reaction is a tear-jerker.
The seconds-long clip captures Kam telling his dad he’ll need to go shopping for “nice clothes” soon. His dad, who was busy on his phone, suddenly looked up at him, confused. “Because I got in,” the son revealed. His dad immediately smiled, heaved a sigh of relief, and slammed his hands victoriously on the table. He didn’t say a word, but within seconds, his eyes welled up. He put his head on the table and covered his face in disbelief and pride. Kam revealed that his dad cried because he finally saw the fulfillment that came after so many struggles. “His sacrifice finally had a name. 'Doctor,'” the young man said.

Crediting his parents for making it to the milestone he had, Kam couldn’t help but recall how even the slightest support and gestures paved the way for him. “All of my life, it has felt like they have poured all of their time and resources into helping my sister and me achieve our dreams,” he said. He mentioned the little and big ways they ensured he chased his dream with all his potential. Right from getting him everything he needed to using their saved money to pay for his college, they sacrificed and gave generously. “They didn’t make me do chores so that I could focus on school, and thousands of other things I don’t have time to list,’ Kam remarked.

What stood out for Kam was the freedom they gave him to dream. The doctor in the making mentioned how he just put the dream out in a statement. “I want to be a doctor,” he said back when he was in the 7th grade. From that moment, they supported him. “They never once questioned it. All they did was believe in me and put me in a position to succeed,” he said. “This moment will live in my heart forever. I’m doing this for them. I always have been,” the young man concluded. This support from parents is crucial in paving the way.
A study from the Pew Research Center revealed that a majority of young American adults have a fruitful relationship with their parents. 59% said their bond with their folks was very good or excellent, while 69% said they could be their truest selves around their parents. 31% of young adults admitted to going to their parents for emotional support. 35% said they sought advice from their parents about their career, 34% about parenting, and a few even looked up to them for finances, relationships, and other factors.

How important is it, then, to have this consistent support? It helps one take their dreams into reality. And how fortunate was Kam to have that in his dad? Even that one silent slam of pride after hearing the news revealed how profound the father-son bond is. Susan Smith said, “To have parents that are that supportive means everything. Treasure them always.” Dixie Karr McFarland Phelps added, “You know, Dad was so worried about this. Congratulations! I know Dad’s happy.”
