Getting disturbed during a much-needed nap is one of the most annoying things anyone can experience. Loud neighbors are always a nuisance, especially when they think nothing of blasting music at odd hours and waking everyone around them. But when one Reddit user’s neighbor ignored repeated requests to keep the volume down, he decided to take matters into his own hands and taught his neighbor a lesson they would never forget. Sharing the story on October 6, the post garnered 7,000 upvotes from fellow Reddit users.

u/DigAffectionate4398 took to the popular subreddit r/traumatizeThemBack to share a story about their loud neighbor. The author, who lived in a duplex, was a neighbor to a man who loved not only listening to music but also blasting his ears off with it. Although the author was understanding and mindful of his neighbor, who worked night shifts, "for months he’d come home around two or three in the morning and start blasting EDM like it was a club. I asked him nicely a few times to keep it down, he’d nod, say 'yeah man sorry,' and then do it again the next night," the post read.

Despite repeated requests not to play loud music when the author sleeps, the neighbor never gave any thought to his well-being. Unfortunately, the author soon began losing sleep and finally decided to take matters into his own hands. To give the neighbor a taste of his own medicine, the author waited until he went to sleep around 8 a.m. and then pulled out his old speakers to the shared wall, playing a video of babies crying on full volume — on loop. After 15 minutes, the neighbor began knocking on his door, "shirtless, hair sticking up, looking like death." He asked if the author had "lost his mind," to which the author quipped, "No, just lost some sleep," as he shut the door on his face. Luckily, the author's efforts paid off as he hasn't heard a sliver of noise from his neighbor ever since.

A study authored by Heidi A. R. Jensen, Birgit Rasmussen, and Ola Ekholm in 2019 explored the association between neighbors' noise annoyance and self-reported health symptoms among 3,893 adults living in multi-story housing. The study found that people who were very annoyed by neighbor noise had significantly higher odds (1.7 to 3.3 times more likely) of reporting various physical and mental health issues, including headaches, fatigue, sleep problems, depression, anxiety, and pain in different body areas.

Soon after the story went viral, many fellow users expressed their satisfaction over the neighbor being taught a lesson. u/BehaviourTrainer wrote, "It always amuses me how fast narcissistic people will immediately reverse their bad behavior the second it impacts them personally. Like, this shouldn't even be a problem, but they're so wrapped up in their Main Character Syndrome that they just don't give a crap that others even exist."

u/Clevertown commented, "Wow, that is badass. I'd just blast black metal, because I wouldn't be able to handle babies!" u/remnant_phoenix commented, "Some people only learn when you hold up a mirror."
