Imagine bringing your partner home for the first time, only for them to demand that you sever ties with someone your family considers one of their own. This was the jarring reality for a 23-year-old Reddit user, u/confused111115, who shared his story eight years ago in hopes of a solution. The story was recently re-shared by u/Direct-Caterpillar77. During a visit to his family's home, his girlfriend of two years, he became deeply unsettled by the presence of Flecia, a lifelong neighbor and honorary family member.

At first, everything seemed to be going smoothly with the man's girlfriend and Felcia hitting it off. However, that changed quickly after a couple of meetings. "After about 3 days, my gf pulled me aside and said she felt very uncomfortable with Felicia's relationship with my family," the man wrote. "She said that it looked like we were married by the way she was treated. I tried telling her that everyone likes her (Felicia) like a cousin or something, but she wasn’t buying."

The man explained that his girlfriend felt it was inappropriate for a woman outside the family to be so closely involved and believed it made it seem like the family would prefer him to be with her, which led her to ask him to distance himself and address the situation with Felicia. He felt that this demand from his partner was a bit too excessive.

To reassure his girlfriend, the man even explained that Flecia had been living on the same street since their childhood days and was like a cousin sister. However, even that didn't cut it. Just a few days later, he updated viewers in a post; unfortunately, his girlfriend had broken up with him. "We met up, and she broke up with me, said that even though rationally she knows I would never cheat and that she believes me, she can’t feel comfortable in a relationship like this," he wrote.

"In terms of breakups, it was pretty ok, we both cried, then we talked and laughed, but I think it was for the best, remaining in the relationship would only hurt us both," the man concluded. Indeed, it was the mature thing to do, as both of them can now move on with their lives. A YouGov survey found that 37% of Americans say they’d want to stay friends with an ex if they were the one who ended the relationship, while 29% say they wouldn’t. Even when the breakup is mutual or amicable, people remained divided, with 31% saying they’d stay friends if their ex ended things, while 34% say they would prefer not to.

Readers had divided opinions about the situation. u/sarahhxmargaret suggested, "OP needs to start referring to her as his cousin. I have ten cousins who are just really close family friends that I grew up with. Call their parents, aunt, and uncle, etc. Blood relations or not, they are my cousins." Meanwhile, u/StopthinkingitsMe believes that how things ended was the best way forward for everyone. "I don't understand, this was the best case scenario — chosen family remains family, a young couple separates on decent terms after understanding their own dealbreakers and learning from the relationship. It's drama-free, healthy, and realistic."
