'He says it makes him feel so good to do little helpful things people can't.'
For Katrina Grabic, life is all about generosity and kindness. To describe the importance of these two values, she chose to share a video of her dad being an epitome of these on Instagram. Grabic, who goes by @glowbeauty.bythegutlabinc, posted a video of her dad, who responded to an electrician advertisement from a woman around eight years ago, and ended up developing a familial bond with her. The woman is now an old lady who used to ring the electrician a few times for emergency work in her house, and throughout the years, they both became each other’s adopted family.
This unexpected connection built through a series of events highlights how kindness can help with social isolation. “A reminder of what it’s all about,” read the text overlay of the video. Grabic is a Registered Acupuncturist and Registered Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Practitioner based in Canada. She helps her client with gut cleansing, acne, and fitness. A study conducted by Harvard Health states that kindness helps the giver more as compared to recipient. It lowers blood pressure and levels of stress hormone, cortisol, increases self-esteem, and makes a person empathetic.
Tyler J. VanderWeele, co-director of the Initiative on Health, Spirituality, and Religion at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, says that kindness has a propagation effect. Which means that one kind act influences others to do more. Studies have also said that kindness as a subject of research was only considered imperative in the late 1990s after the “positive psychology” movement, and was put together with gratitude and forgiveness. And recently, in 2024, an international trial by Social Psychiatry and Psychiatric Epidemiology pointed out the effect of kindness in reducing loneliness and social isolation, thus boosting healthy relationships in society.
The video shared by Grabica stands true, as now the old lady is seen sharing her life stories with her father. “My dad met this woman many years ago. They were in different stages of life during that time. He helped her every few years with work around her home,” she shared in the caption. “My dad’s heart & also just the fragility of life. It reminded me why I do what I do, why I first started this. My dad can no longer help her without my sister’s help. He injured himself at work a couple of years ago, and his health hasn’t been the same since. My mom’s role switched from wife to caretaker and nurse. He still answers these women’s electrical calls. He says it makes him feel so good to do little helpful things people can't, but he can (with my sister's help)."
Her father started with nothing when he first came to Canada and has now built a beautiful home resting on hard work and kindness. She shared that he is a very adamant “about doing the right thing by God.” Grabica ended her story with a dream that suggested her potential spiritual awakening related to the family lineage. People shared their affection towards this post, "This is truly amazing. What a wonderful man, passing on all the lovely qualities onto you and the next generations. Beau-ti-ful!!" wrote @miranda.serwa. "This is so beautiful, your Dad is a wonderful man, thank you for sharing, bless you," shared @anaiyah211221. @a_sinful_salmon lamented, "I wish I could've talked to my great-grandmother more. She was such a lively and wonderful woman, and I was just so young. I know nothing but what my mom's told me about her. What I'd give to high her again."
