'Sometimes you gotta wear your earring on your sleeve – a feminist proverb,' said Kadia Tubman
A typical Delta Airlines flight turned into a massive social media standoff after a passenger "installed" a sharp earring on her sleeve. The conversation escalated online when the co-passenger blamed her for being passive-aggressive and stabbing her, only for the targeted woman to clarify that it was a defense mechanism against what he was doing with his arm. In an October 17, 2026, Instagram reel, comedian-actor Kevin Fredericks (@kevonstage) reshared the incident originally posted by Otto (@ottosipe) and has since tallied 1.2 million views.
Although Otto has now made his account private, Fredericks shared a screenshot of the post in which Otto detailed the Delta flight. “Met a very passive-aggressive passenger on @delta today. Immediately angry about my using the armrest before takeoff,” Otto wrote. He added that the seatmate, a woman, "installed" an earring on her sleeve that poked him when the turbulence hit the plane. He calmly asked her to remove it, but she insisted that he was taking too much space because he was a man. “This is the best thing ever,” Fredericks remarked, adding that Sipe was surprised that people were not on his side.
Turned out the woman on Sipe’s adjoining seat was Kadia Tubman, a news correspondent from Brooklyn. A day after Fredericks’ post, she posted a video on her Instagram detailing 10 facts from the flight and roasting Sipe in a 5-part video series. She explained that they were seated on a 2x2 seater with her on the aisle seat and Sipe on the window seat.
Throughout the flight, Otto kept working on his laptop and using both armrests, including the middle one. As his arm moved up and down in dramatic typing motions, it kept poking Tubman and waking her up, and that was not due to turbulence, as he described it. It was an early morning flight, and she was trying to fall asleep, but each time she did, she was shaken awake by the touch of the man’s arm, which felt “invasive” and “obnoxious.”
When she couldn’t take it anymore, she put the earring on her sleeve but claimed he must have been sitting too close to her to be poked by it. She claimed that her arm wasn’t even on the armrest but within her seat’s space. He encroached outside his seat’s space and got stabbed by her earring. “I put that earring on in the last 20 minutes of the flight because I had had enough,” Tubman remarked and added, “Sometimes you have to wear your earring on your sleeve—a feminist proverb.” Back then, when the flight attendant arrived to review the matter, the entitled man changed the entire story and left without speaking to the captain.
Seat encroachment and personal space disputes are the leading causes of passengers' irritation and in-flight friction. For instance, a report by Condé Nast Traveller explained that “encroaching on personal space” and “disagreements over items such as armrests” are common triggers for “conflict with other passengers” on a flight. Similarly, according to a report by The Point Guy and YouGov, only 11% of the surveyed people said that the middle-seated passengers should claim both armrests.

Meanwhile, Frederick’s video also gathered supportive remarks for Tubman. Many admitted that her use of earrings was a brilliant strategy. @liamarie_life commented, “This is genius because the earring is on her; she's not attacking you, she's not touching you, and it actually only hurts you if you touch her.” @abbielicious07 remarked, “Stop encroaching, and you won’t get stabbed, simple.” @jakblunt said, “Naw. She's a seasoned traveler, and this has to be her standard.”
