He thought he would scare her into getting back together with divorce papers

Filing for divorce is usually a last resort for couples and not a decision to take lightly. However, a woman who goes by u/Low_Flower_1846 revealed that her husband of 15 years filed for divorce after they got in a physical altercation. After a month of living separately, he filed for legal separation, but "accidentally" filed for divorce instead. The author had hoped they would fix their marriage, but was forced to serve him the papers when his behavior worsened. He is now demanding an apology from her for responding to the divorce. The post from July 24, 2026, received 8,600 upvotes and 414 comments.
The church had been supportive of the author and advised the husband to move out, since he was at fault. However, things just got worse. They were advised not to take any drastic steps. But after a month, he could not take it anymore and filed for divorce. As per his story, his lawyer made a mistake while filing the paperwork. The author did not buy that story: "I think he filed for divorce, chickened out, changed his mind, and forgot to double-check the change on the first page." He later amended it to "separation," but she was told she had to respond to the initial divorce filing. She did not want to do it, but was pushed by his actions to respond in favor of the divorce.

It was supposed to be their first day of marriage counseling, but the husband was handed the divorce papers the very same day. He was not happy at all and refused to attend the counseling session. He blamed her and the divorce papers she served him as the reason why they could never fix their marriage. Additionally, he also demanded she apologize to him. But she pointed out that she would never have gone that route, and it was all just a response to "his divorce filing."

Regretting after filing for divorce is all too common. An Avvo study conducted in 2016 found that at least a third of divorced couples regret their decision. Of 254 women and 206 men who responded to the survey, 27% of women and 32% of men regretted their divorces. Additionally, a PubMed study by Shelby B. Scott found that there are various reasons people get divorced. The most common reason was lack of commitment (75%), followed by infidelity (59.6%), and conflict or arguing (57.7%).
Domestic violence was also a factor, accounting for 23.5% of divorces. The research is accurate in the case of the author. Their separation began due to domestic violence, and later on, after the husband filed for divorce, he instantly regretted it.

Netizens were advising the author to find a competent lawyer to fight her case. They also congratulated her for getting out of an abusive marriage. u/insertcaffeine commented, "I know this sucks and it hurts. 15 years is a long time, and divorce is a big change. I’m proud of you for divorcing him, and glad your girls are safe and getting a yummy girl dinner." u/RaiZzi shared, "My ex and I filled the papers out together, and he filed them. His plan was to not show up to court, so it wouldn't go through, just to scare me into staying. The judge said 'It's uncontested. You just wanna go ahead with it since he isn't here? Yup? Okay, congrats. You're divorced." I called my ex, and he lost his shit. Who files for divorce just to scare their partner?"
