'I heard something as I went to put the mail in the box — it wasn't normal...' he said.
Cecil Cloyed, a mailman in Kerrville, Texas, was on his routine delivery route when he heard a faint call for help. Soon enough, he realized the noise was from Alicia Ramos' residence — an 80-year-old lady Cloyed had known for years. The mailman was concerned for the lady, and so he decided to intervene, and his next move, in fact, saved Alicia's life, MYSA reported.
The mailman sensed something off and decided to check in on Alicia. He reached her doorstep, knocked on her door, but when she didn't open, Cloyed tried searching for a spare key to her house. However, when he couldn't find an alternative key to get inside, he called 911. Within no time, first responders arrived, and what they found inside shocked them to the core. Alicia apparently had a bad fall and had been stranded there for three days. The old lady couldn't reach out for help, so she was basically trying to alert people by calling for help. As the officers rescued Alicia and took her under their care, the mailman resumed his mail delivery, but only after informing a neighbor to let her daughter know of the situation. "You can't delay the mail," Cloyed joked. At the city council meeting, he also shared why he halted his duty and investigated the matter. Cloyed explained, "Her mailbox is not on the curbside, because she's older. She gets special treatment. I go to her house. And I heard something as I went to put the mail in the box — it wasn't normal." The mailman's gesture was appreciated, and he was honored with the "Kerrville Kindness Award," in front of his wife and the entire city.
As a senior citizen, living alone is terrifying. Imagine what would have happened if Cloyed, the mailman, hadn't stopped to check in on Alicia. She suffered a bad fall and had been stranded inside her residence for 3 days without any help. Any more delay could have negatively impacted her health in ways we couldn't have even imagined. Just like Alicia, countless old people live alone without much support, and in many cases are found either dead or helpless by paramedics. In fact, a survey in the city of San Francisco found that among 387 such cases, the average age of the people found was 73 years old. Moreover, it was found that more than half of the people involved were women. In another such incident, Leandro Pinto Dantas, a delivery driver, accidentally saved a woman's life when he followed his gut. The driver arrived at the woman's residence to drop off her groceries, but there was no response at the door. Dantas knew something was off because he realized the TV and lights were all switched on, but the customer wasn't responding.
"I believe God made me go back to the window, and I pushed some branches away so I could get a better look," he told Bournemouth Echo. Dantas looked through the window and noticed the elderly woman lying unconscious on the floor. The delivery guy immediately informed a neighbor and called 999, the emergency services. Later, paramedics confirmed that her low blood sugar levels could have led to a far worse result had she not been rescued on time.
