A postal worker's quick thinking to save a stranger's life earned him a new family during the Thanksgiving season.
There are moments when acts of kindness between strangers restore our faith in humanity. One such encounter between a postal service worker and an elderly gentleman not only saved the latter from sustaining major injuries but earned him a new buddy as well. It was just another day for a man named Guy Miller, who was out on a walk with his dog Bentley, when he slipped and fell on the road, injuring himself. Miller, who resides in Aurora, Chicago, was fortunately spotted by United States Postal Service worker Jaylen Lockhart. Without hesitation, Lockhart sprang into action, rushing to Miller's aid, reports NBC Chicago.
The USPS worker told reporters he spotted Miller take a "tumble" in his rearview mirror while driving his postal truck through the neighborhood. He promptly stopped to help him and dialed 911. Lockhart also reached out to a few neighbors to collect Miller's address and ensured the senior's wife, Marcia, was informed about the incident. "I wasn't sure exactly what I was getting myself into. But I did know that whatever he was going through on that ground, we were going to go through it together," Lockart told WLS-TV. His quick thinking and selflessness not only saved Miller but also forged a heartwarming bond with the Millers, who now consider him part of their family.
When planning their Thanksgiving dinner in 2024, the Millers made sure to invite Lockhart to join their family feast. "I said, 'What are you doing for Thanksgiving? Do you have a family?' We said, 'We're family, definitely,'" Marcia shared with NBC Chicago, adding that it was "really good to see kindness, compassion and care in the world." Lockhart’s selfless actions also caught the attention of Aurora’s mayor, Richard Irvin, who honored him with the Mayor's Award of Service. Lockhart even helped decorate the city's holiday tree during the Aurora Winter Lights Fest. "You make us all Aurora proud," Irvin told Lockhart during the ceremony, per WFLD.
"I'm blessed and so glad that I was chosen to do this," Lockhart told the outlet. "I will hold this near and dear to my heart." The City of Aurora, IL Government's official Facebook page shared an update, noting that Miller was "bruised but will be okay" after sustaining a minor head injury in the fall. Miller's daughter, Ashley, used Facebook to track down the heroic mailman who had come to her father's rescue. Lockhart’s actions earned widespread praise in the post’s comment section, with many applauding his kindness and quick response. Through this chance encounter, Lockhart found not just gratitude but also a new family with the Millers.
Melanie Blum Pilafas mentioned, "Saw this story on the evening news. It was wonderful to hear some good news. Jaylen, hoping your concern and kindness come full circle." Chris Boyles quipped, "Jaylen received gold stars in heaven! My mailmen, Charles and Kyle, are just as caring. The Aurora Post Office rocks!" Jen Mendoza shared, "Thank you Jaylen! This happened in my subdivision. How grateful we are for your act of kindness!" Elizabeth McNelis wrote, "Beautiful meeting by chance. Thank you so much to our young man for helping a senior." Tori Chanél added, "I personally know this guy and Trisha. They are the sweetest people."
