A maid of honor's (MOH) devious plan to extract money from wedding guests has sparked outrage online. The drama unfolded when some bridesmaids refused to pay $500 each for the bridal shower. Frustrated, the MOH told the bride and groom's close friends that she would cover the entire cost if others refused. However, her actual diabolical plan came to light when guests received a group text saying they owed $150 per person for attending the wedding. The post, shared by one of the guests (u/thesweetsourfish) on August 28, 2026, has received over 4,000 upvotes on Reddit.

A sketchy plot

When the bridesmaid refused to pay the bridal fees, the MOH said she would pay on their behalf. However, she secretly reached out to 18 of the 27 guests and charged them $150 each after the bridal shower. To avoid being seen as sly, the maid of honor cut the names of the couple’s close friends to keep them away from her devious plan. "This is so sketchy. I was talking to close friends of the couple, and they still think she paid for everything," the author confessed.

A firm no

The wedding ceremony was hosted at a restaurant, where guests were served appetizers and an entree. Mind you, the drinks were not included in the menu. In fact, goodie bags or party favors were also not included. "Just hearing everyone talk so highly of the MOH that she is so generous when she charged everyone pisses me off," the author said. Moreover, they shared that MOH contacted them privately for money. She told the author she would only be covering for the close friends and family, and not them. The wedding guest who shared the story online refused to pay.

A costly RSVP

The entire episode wouldn’t have left such a disturbing memory on the wedding guests if there had been clear communication about the wedding expenses. Finances make up a big part of any wedding for the couple and their guests. Unexpected expenses are why guests often decline wedding invitations. A LendingTree survey suggests that about a third (34%) of wedding guests have declined a wedding invitation because of the expenses. The pressure to spend on weddings is so real that 31% of Americans said they've taken on debt to attend a wedding.

'Shady behavior'

Reddit readers were enraged at the MOH’s treatment of the guests. They urged the author to decline the offer and not contribute any money. For instance, u/SmoothNoonShade commented, "I’d call the bride crying about how you didn’t know and can’t really afford it, and you thought you got a nice gift, and you just feel so bad and so embarrassed and so sorry. Let that shit stew and see what comes of it." u/shesalive_dammit wrote, "I'd be snitching so bad right now. This is some shady behavior, and the couple deserves to know that the guests who were invited in their honor are being mistreated."
