Chris proposed to the author a year ago, and their wedding was in October. Lena and the author had been friends since college, so when she got engaged, Lena was the first to know. The latter immediately offered to be her maid of honor, even though the bride herself did not ask. As the months passed, the author noticed certain changes. At first, Lena would point out small things, such as how “quiet” Chris was. In her words, “You guys are so cute. In a boring way.” Later, her comments turned into digs. During the author’s birthday party. Lena said in front of six guests, “I just don't see it. But hey, love is blind, right?" Nobody laughed, and the room got tense.

Things turned sour at the author’s bridal shower. Lena's toast began, “I always thought I'd be the one getting married first. But here we are. And Chris, well, he's no Prince Charming, but he makes her happy. I guess.” She followed it with a laugh, but none of the 30 people present were laughing. The author saw her MIL giving her a look of pity, and that's when she knew Lena had crossed a line. She pulled her aside and confronted her, saying that it was not funny to make jokes at Chris' expense. Lena tried to make light of the situation and said that the author was too sensitive. Finally, the author put her foot down and said, "It's not a joke. You've been doing this for a year. I'm done."

The author took away Lena’s title as maid of honor. She was still invited to the wedding, just not as her maid of honor. She could attend as a guest. Shocked by the author's decision, Lena cried and begged her not to remove her as MOH. She accused the author of "choosing a man" over their friendship and of breaking their bond of 15 years over "a few jokes." The author's friends said she overreacted, and her mother told her to give Lena a second chance, but the author wrote, "Jealousy doesn't give you a microphone and permission to humiliate my fiancé at my own shower."

Friendships are not immune to jealousy, and people prioritize relationships differently. A 2024 YouGov survey discovered that single and committed people view friendships and family in different lights. 26% of single Americans said their friends were more important than family, while 19% of committed adults said the same. However, 64% of single and committed Americans said that their friendship group is a really important part of their life.
Finally, 24% of single respondents said they envied their friends' lifestyles. 34% of committed individuals said the same. Lena might be jealous of the author’s life, since she always thought she would get married first, which caused her to say ugly things about Chris. Additionally, the author removed Lena as her MOH because she valued her relationship with her fiancé more than her friendship.

People in the comment section called out Lena, and those who excused her behavior. u/Spirited_Emu_1892 commented, “You deserve joy on your wedding day, not jealousy and drama. Can you imagine her speech at your wedding? You did the right thing, and she should be mad at herself. Her behavior caused this change." u/Actual-Bandicoot6947 suggested, “I would uninvite her altogether. She's not your friend."
