Pop star pens breakup song after 40 women DM her about her cheating boyfriend

It's no surprise when artists come out with bangers after a messy breakup. American country singer Lauren Alaina did exactly that with her promotional single. While co-hosting Backstage Country, she revealed that one of her songs from her latest album, "Stages," was inspired by her last serious relationship right before she got married. Alaina released the official audio on YouTube on May 29, and it received 52,521 views, 1,100 likes, and 39 comments.

Not a prank

Alaina did not explicitly name names, but she did mention that the song "Better Off" was written for one of her exes. She even revealed that it was her last serious relationship before she married her husband, Cameron Arnold. She told the radio show, "He had a lot of girlfriends. I was one of many." But it was the way she found out that hurt and humiliated her. Alaina revealed that she received a lot of "Hey girl" DMs on Instagram.

"At first I thought it was just people with false realities, and by like the 10th or 11th gal, I was like, 'This is starting to be so weird.'" By the end of the relationship, she admitted that at least 40 to 50 women had come forward to tell her the truth about her man. The lines, "The cheater that you cheated with cheated on you / Used to not like her, but now I kinda do," captured the truth of her experience

Creative liberties

Alaina also spoke a little bit about the song, saying that it is a reflection of the hurt and pain she felt during this phase in her life. However, not every line is true. She admitted that she embellished a few parts of the song. The line, "Bet you thought that ring felt better off," wasn't entirely true since she and her ex-boyfriend were not married. She took some creative liberty to write how she had felt and melded it with the woman she is today.

Musician's fodder

As mentioned, several artists take inspiration from their personal lives to write their songs. A OnePoll survey cited by Talker News revealed that 36% of fans actually like it when artists write using experiences from their lives, and 38% loved it. Additionally, 41% of fans believed that a musician's ex can be used as "fodder" for music, and 71% actually enjoyed learning who the song was written about. One such example is Jake Gyllenhaal, who was the subject of Taylor Swift's "All Too Well." So, it wasn't a big surprise when Alaina decided to use her bad relationship to fuel her song too.

Friends and fans praised Alaina's voice, lyrics, and talent in the comments. @glenngambit commented, "Beautiful song. I hope it’s just storytelling and not a reflection of your personal life. Wishing you and your family happiness and strength." @jacquelinewinder4175 chimed in, "I’ve listened to it a few times before it was released, so glad it’s finally out. I’m obsessed with it."
