Larry David explains why he would never go to a destination wedding — and we totally get it

David explained, "First of all, you're spending $20,000 to get there. If you're flying to Europe, my God, at a hotel, it's gonna cost..."

Destination weddings are nothing short of an extravaganza for their exotic locations, intimate experience, and unapologetically excessive spending. The guests invited to such wholesome events are typically gobsmacked by their lavishness and high-voltage entertainment. However, not everyone gets as tempted (as most of us like to believe) by these getaway marriages-cum-festivities. TV producer and actor, Larry David, is one such person, and it’s not really hard to understand why the American comic feels this way. The 77-year-old spoke at length about this topic while being featured on the popular "The Rich Eisen Show."

A widely shared video from the daily sports entertainment show featured David opening up about the idea of tying the knot in a fancy way. The comedian hilariously mocked the destination wedding trend in a no-holds-barred way. “I say to my wife, we're going to a destination wedding. We should not give a present because my presence is my present,” prompted Eisen, sharing his POV. David then revealed that he never really cared about attending a destination wedding if it was planned for another country. “You don't even go in the first place,” announced the “Seinfeld” writer, prompting the host to laugh out loud.

Another follow-up question awaited the comedian — would he attend the wedding if it were for a close family friend? While reiterating his stance, David retorted, “I don't care. I am not flying 14 hours on a plane to somebody's wedding.” Upon hearing this, Eisen asked again, “Even if it's a nice destination where it's a nice hotel and you're set-up?” The comedian shot back with his witty reply, “No, 14 hours on a plane. You can't even breathe. Come on.” At this point, the talk show host could relate to his guest’s perspective, yet he had one more question.

“So, what would be the distance from your house that you would consider?” Eisen asked, purely out of sheer curiosity. David’s response was that he would not be willing to board a flight to attend someone’s wedding. However, if it took an 'hour and a half' by car to reach the location from his home, he’d still consider it. "That's it. No plane, you don't get on planes for weddings," the comedian continued, declaring that air travel was out of the question.

When David was asked about his usual RSVP response to not attending such events, the comic shared that he simply wrote to the invitees: “Can't make it, too far. That's it.” Moreover, he never followed it up with any phone calls. “They have to know when they're inviting you, they're putting you, they're making you go on a plane,” emphasized the comedian, concluding, “First of all, you're spending $20,000 to get there. If you're flying to Europe, my God, at a hotel, it's gonna cost $15,000.”

The nearly five-minute interaction between the duo discussing the awkward social situations managed to draw widespread attention on social media. It garnered 145,919 views since the time it was posted in October 2017. Among the reactions, @littleripper312 agreed, “I've been asked to fly to different countries for weddings and close friends have been shocked that I won't go.” “I just love how they asked Larry whether or not you bring a gift to an out-of-country wedding. He didn’t even answer that question, he just said ‘don’t go’. This man is absolutely hilarious and I can’t explain why,” @deadheadwsp705 wrote.
