19-year-old Spanish footballer Lamine Yamal and his national team made history on July 19, 2026 by winning the FIFA World Cup final match against Argentina (1-0). He made his FIFA World Cup debut on June 15 but has been a household name since he was 16 (2023). While crowds in stadiums may chant his name, not many may know where he got it from. Born in Catalonia, he is supposed to follow Spanish naming conventions, where people have two surnames (father's first surname followed by mother's first surname), but Lamine Yamal Nasraoui Ebana's parents did not follow this custom. The first two surnames did not even belong to his parents, revealed AS on July 19, 2026.

How Yamal got his name

Lamine Yamal was born to a Moroccan father, Mounir Nasraoui, and an Equatorial Guinean mother, Sheila Ebana. However, Yamal is not his last name. His parents' first surnames were supposed to follow after his first name, but instead, their surnames came in third and fourth. The news outlet revealed that while Yamal's mother was pregnant with him, his parents struggled financially and emotionally. Thanks to two kind individuals, 'Lamine' and 'Yamal,' his parents were given shelter when they could not even afford to pay rent. To show their eternal gratitude, they decided to name their son after the two generous people who helped them in times of need.

Meaning of Lamine Yamal

Tribuna also revealed the meanings associated with the name 'Lamine Yamal.' Lamine is a common Muslim name in parts of North Africa. It is often associated with 'honesty,' 'integrity,' and 'trustworthiness.' It is also a form of 'Al-Amin,' another masculine Arabic name, meaning 'the truthful.' On the other hand, Yamal is an Arabic name that means 'beauty.' Yamal is also the Chuvash version of Jamal. It shares the same meaning (beauty/to be beautiful).

Who named whom?

Choosing a name for a child is one of the first and biggest decisions parents make. A 2022 YouGov poll revealed that 38% of respondents said their name was chosen by both parents, 27% by their mother, and 11% by their father. Surprisingly, 3% said their name was chosen by a sibling, and 1% said that a doctor or a nurse chose their name for them. The majority of American parents (30%) chose a first name because they liked the way it sounded, 27% were named after a family member, and only 6% were named after a family friend.

'Real pressure'

Lamine Yamal spoke to Cadena SER and talked about how his family struggled: "My mother gave birth to me when she was 16... My dad had to go out and earn a living, sometimes picking things up from the streets just to bring food home. For me, that's real pressure." To date, neither Yamal nor his parents has revealed the true identity of the two kind individuals who helped them.
