Back to where it all began

The journey began with the family secretly planning the getaway to honor Joe's dream of returning to the iconic property. From the second they arrived, the hotel team planned a grand welcome for the 81-year-old. "Everyone knew his name, and people were stopping him in the corridors to say hello," Kate recalled. After settling into their gorgeous rooms, the family headed straight to Browns, the hotel bar, for their first Guinness of the trip, while Joe kept everyone entertained with old stories. Later that evening, they headed to Arbor for dinner. Interestingly, it was the same dining room where Joe worked as a young man nearly six decades ago.

A wholesome experience 

The highlight of the trip unfolded the next morning when the family woke to a delicious breakfast spread with Irish bacon, sausages, and homemade Guinness bread. Beyond the food, the hotel team presented Joe with a special piece of history that left him stunned: a framed archival photo of him at the hotel 58 years ago. Joe also spotted the same chandelier that hung above him years ago when he worked there as a young man. The emotional surprise led to a heartwarming moment when Joe met staff members who had been there for over 50 years. Before leaving, they recreated the memory by taking a photo of him standing in the exact same spot where 23-year-old Joe once stood "with his whole life ahead of him," Kate explained. 

Such stories highlight the enduring legacy of service professionals. In the United States, the hotel industry remains a fundamental part of the labor market, employing approximately 1.92 million people, according to data cited by the American Hotel & Lodging Association. However, surprisingly, that's around 196,000 fewer workers than before the pandemic began in 2020.
