'It's not okay for somebody to talk to her like that'
It’s usually a special moment for a child when they are learning something new. But for one little girl, it quickly turned into a public humiliation. While her eyes traced the items on a pizzeria’s menu, her father yelled at her, calling her a dummy for not being able to read. Sitting across their table, a woman named Jen Hamilton (@_jen_hamilton_) “couldn’t take it anymore.” She scooted right up to their table and inspired the 5-year-old girl with an empowering lesson that she will probably remember for a lifetime. Hamilton documented the interaction in a November 8, 2024, TikTok video, which has since tallied 12.6 million views and over a million likes.
Hamilton was out for a pizza dinner with her husband and kids when the incident took place. Her husband pointed out a father who was yelling at his daughter. Hamilton was sitting across the table, in a way that she could see the father’s back and the daughter’s face. The man was teaching his daughter to read the menu, but instead of supporting her, he started criticizing her. “You can't just look at this and say whatever comes to your mind, like fish,” Hamilton confessed.

By now, the girl was in tears. "What did I do, Daddy? What did I do?" she asked as she struggled to read out the words on the menu. However, her dad mercilessly replied, "You're not even trying; you're just going to grow up to be a dummy." At this point, Hamilton couldn’t take it anymore, so she put down the fork, stood up, walked to their table, and said, "I understand you want her to learn to read, but in these moments, she's only going to remember how you made her feel."
She tried to make him understand that how one treats their children reflects how they were treated in childhood. "I just hope that one day she doesn't find comfort and solace in that kind of language because she doesn't deserve to feel that way," Hamilton concluded. Moreover, she explained that she wants the little girl to realize that "it's not okay for somebody to talk to her like that." Meanwhile, the father even tried to justify his reaction, saying he gets frustrated easily.

A study of 128 parent-child dyads published in the National Institutes of Health (NIH) PMC Archive found that while most parents self-reported frequent praise and rare criticism, direct observation revealed parents criticized children nearly three times more often than they praised them. Whether criticism or praise, researchers found that parents’ feedback is important in shaping their young children’s behavior and development. So since this dad was calling his daughter a “dummy,” she might grow up believing that she’s a dummy without ever questioning it.

TikTok viewers applauded Hamilton for standing up for the little girl. Many cooked up scenarios about how the girl is probably treated by her dad at their home. @citytocountrygirl commented, “We need more people in the world like you, Jen!” @cozy_crochet22 said, “My 5-year-old can’t read, doesn’t know his letters or numbers, and can’t say sounds correctly. Want to know what we do? We get them the help they need! You fight for your kid, not fight your kid.” @mult1d1mens1ional reflected, “The crazy thing is, abuse is always worse behind closed doors.”
