Workplace boundaries are essential for an individual’s overall well-being. These include a clear line between professional conduct and involvement in personal matters. Certain colleagues may, however, attempt to violate these boundaries, and when that happens, we must stand against them. Maria Brockington (@she.is.ri_) did exactly that when she encountered a nosy coworker at the office. In a June 6, 2026, post on Threads, she shared how she turned the tables on an intrusive coworker who kept intruding on her personal life by repeatedly asking about her child's father. At last, Brockington pulled a petty revenge to flip the script and protect her personal space. Her post has gone viral with over 2,500 likes online.

Overstepping personal boundaries

The nosy coworker once ran into Brockington at a store and discovered she had kids. Surprised, she asked about the author's husband, only to learn from her daughter that she was not married. Since then, the coworker has left no opportunity to ask Brockington about her baby daddy. She was annoyed by the persistent intrusion but never lost her calm. "I kept quiet and just made a little note of the date and time she asked me each time. In total, she asked me 563 times in 2 years who my 'baby daddy is,'" Brockington shared.

Tit for tat

With each passing day, Brockington's frustration grew, and she finally decided to teach her coworker a lesson. She took a picture of her coworker’s father and manipulated it by adding her own photo. "On the 564th time, I turned around and said, really sadly, 'I've been trying to keep quiet about this.' I was really dramatic, like, 'Here, damn.' He showed her various pictures of her daddy with me," Brockington recalled.

In another update, she reported that her coworker started crying and seemed offended because she used her dead father's picture as a joke. When the HR representative confronted Brockington, she laid out the printout of the 563-time spreadsheet. Consequently, the coworker was fired from the job. On the other hand, Brockington received a pay raise, a new hybrid-style work schedule, and an office with a door.

Workplace nosiness

Workplace nosiness is a serious matter. Persistent intervention can cause a person to develop resistance and violation towards their workplace, even if they love their job. According to a study published in the International Journal of Hospitality Management, intrusive workplace nosiness can spike an employee’s stress and affect their overall task performance. And as shocking as it may sound, Richard A. Currie and Mark G. Ehrhart, in their survey, found that about 33% of respondents reported encountering a nosy person at work at least weekly, while a similar share said they met someone like that every month.

10 points for patience

Meanwhile, people praised Brockington's clever trick to deal with the nosy coworker. For instance, @shorthairchai_ said, "I’m so proud of you for documenting it! I wish I had foresight in moments like it! But damn, that’s crazy how many times she’s asked." Similarly, @britbreb0502 remarked, "You have far more patience than I do. On the third ask, I would have threatened to take her to HR if she ever asked again. Then on the 4th, I would make the call! But this is brilliant!"
