A woman got a gut punch recently when she walked into her room and started rummaging through her friend Renee’s bag. Bundled alongside Renee’s own stuff was a bunch of stuff that belonged to her. On August 14, 2026, Ohio-based Skylar Valentine (@skylar080700) talked about bearing the brunt of her friend’s disappointing kleptomaniac habits. After she drove two hours to bring her home for a tattoo appointment, she never expected to end up in a situation like this. Her video has received over 770,000 views on her Instagram.

A bag of secrets

Valentine dropped her friend Renee at her place after driving for two hours, and left for her tattoo appointment. Upon returning, she noticed there were only a few clothes in her wash basket. "I just noticed the vibes are really fucking weird. And the only thing that was in my dirty clothes basket was my shirt and my Lululemon leggings... they were not in there," Valentine recalled. Confused, she checked Renee's bag and found all her missing stuff there. Angry, she asked her friend if she knew anything about her Lululemon leggings. "I'm not trying to be confrontational, but I'm going to give you one chance to be honest," Valentine told her. Things got complicated when Renee refused, and Valentine opened her bag. One after the other, she started emptying her stuff and found her missing Victoria’s Secret underwear, a pair of Nike leggings, Apple Watch bands, etc.

Trust issues activated

"Unbelievable," Valentine exclaimed. She expressed her resentment and tried to get an explanation, but Renee stood there blank-faced. This was something she never expected from a friendship. “This is crazy. I would never do this to someone," Valentine remarked bitterly. In the caption, she confessed how horrible the experience made her feel and that she became afraid to make a new friend ever again in her lifetime. Moreover, while confronting Renee, Valentine also recalled her horrifying past, saying how hard she worked to buy a decent lifestyle after being homeless for a year. "I am someone that has actually busted my ass for everything that I deserve. I thought, like, someone, like, I thought you were someone I could genuinely trust as a friend," she said.

Psychology behind stealing

If a psychologist witnessed this situation, they would probably classify Renee’s behaviour as “kleptomania.” According to the Mayo Clinic, it is an impulse control disorder where one person is unable to resist the urge to steal items they don’t even need. Most people with kleptomania steal from public places, but some may steal from friends and acquaintances. In conversation with Vidette Online, Colleen Farrell, spokesperson for drugstore.com, also revealed the results of a survey, in which nearly 52% of roommates confessed to stealing random items from their friends. While 10% of the cases involved the theft of clothing or jewelry, 34% involved the theft of snacks like chips, coffee, and cookies.

Meanwhile, viewers were just as shocked that a friend would go all the way to steal her friend's underwear. For instance, @invisiblesanhiches commented, “Stealing underwear is wild.” Similarly, @bbyegan added, “Your composure was incredible. Like you handled this so well and also stood on business. So much respect for you, friend!”
