When a petty neighbor targeted her lawn, instead of retreating, this homeowner launched a flawless counterattack

Some people act as if their personal preference is equivalent to the law. They operate under the assumption that they can bully others without repercussions. But as one overzealous neighbor recently discovered, negative actions indeed have a funny way of triggering heavy consequences. This incident came to light after a female (u/carissa_24) took to Reddit on July 5, 2020, to share how she retaliated against a neighbor who threatened her for not "mowing the lawn properly." The post has received over 8,500 upvotes.
The author and her problematic neighbor moved into a newly constructed neighborhood with no HOA around the same time. But both had different ways of mowing their lawns. While her neighbor, after mowing her lawn, would meticulously collect the grass clippings and throw them away, the author used a mulching mower and left the clippings to decompose naturally. This minor divergence silently simmered at first until one afternoon, when the author left her lawn unmowed to run errands.

When she came back, she found her front porch and door completely covered in raked-up grass clippings she had left in her lawn. Moreover, the author also found a threatening note from her neighbor warning her that she must maintain her lawn "properly"; otherwise, there would be serious consequences. However, rather than retreating, the author immediately confronted the lady next door, telling her that she would call the police if "she ever tried a stunt like this again." She also explained to her that if she had an issue, she should talk it out like an adult.
Nonetheless, following the confrontation, the neighbor's husband apologized to the author for his wife's behavior. Aware now that the neighborhood lacked an HOA to police her yard aesthetic, the author then decided to launch a targeted attack on her neighbor. For the next six months, she didn't mow her front lawn, letting it grow thick and unruly. "I made sure to mow the backyard and make a display of bagging those cuttings and carrying them out front for the neighbor to see, but left the front nice and overgrown," she confessed.
Regardless, the last blow came when the author noticed the neighbor's vehicle parked on the public street. After discovering that the local code enforcement couldn't mandate a lawn's height but could impound a vehicle on the street for 72 hours, she decided to take action. The author reported the violation, after which the code enforcement issued a staggering $600 fine against her neighbor.

The author isn't the only person who has experienced a back-and-forth confrontation with their neighbor. In fact, nearly half (42%) of Americans reported having a dispute with their neighbor, according to a survey by FindLaw.com. Of these people who've engaged in a feud with their neighbor, about 18% have done so because of property appearance, trash, and visual nuisances. While people have different ways of dealing with such issues, 49% said they have directly discussed the issue with their neighbor, 27% have called cops, and 15% complained to their homeowners' association. Additionally, only 11% confessed to sending a letter, note, or email to resolve such issues.

Continuing the sentiment, people also shared their personal experiences within the comments section. u/Misternef commented, "They sound similar to a neighbor I had growing up. We came back from vacation one summer to find all the bushes cut to the ground around the house. The neighbor lady came over and told us she cut them because she couldn't see in our windows." Meanwhile, u/theonlymissub noted, "Wow, I’ve never heard of anyone complaining about how you should mow your lawn. Bloody ridiculous, but I’m glad she got hers in the end."
