Kitten spots a frightened dog at the vet — sneaks out of his crate to cuddle up to him

After a heavy downpour, a tiny kitten named Ginger Biscuit was found soaking wet and desperately in need of help. Rescuers brought him to Greenside Animal Hospital, where he was placed in the isolation ward to recover in peace. Since there was no information about his health, the team wanted to ensure he could rest quietly and safely. At just 8 to 10 weeks old, Ginger was understandably overwhelmed and a little frightened of his new surroundings. His nervousness was evident as he hesitated to interact with anyone who passed by to care for him.

The hospital’s owners, Drs. Joubert Viljoen and Suzette Greube, shared with The Dodo that while Ginger was shy at first, he had a quiet, loving personality. "He is a bit wary of people when they enter the isolation ward until he sees us bringing food, then he is happy to creep out of his shell and interact," they explained. With time, Ginger began to trust his caretakers and slowly let his sweet side shine through.

Ginger wasn’t alone in the isolation ward for long. Another kitten named Anne was brought to the hospital after being found as a stray at a nearby sports club, hiding in a bush. Anne’s condition was heartbreaking—he was frail, covered in ticks and fleas, and clearly unwell. A trainer from the sports club took him to Greenside Animal Hospital, where the staff quickly got to work treating him and making him as comfortable as possible. Like Ginger, Anne had faced incredible odds, but the hospital team was determined to help him heal.

At Greenside Animal Hospital, the dogs and cats are typically kept apart, but the isolation ward is an exception. Crates for Anne and Ginger were located on opposite sides of the room. The personnel believed that there was no possibility that they could have any interaction. But Anne had something else on his mind. One day, when entering the isolation ward, staff members were shocked after they couldn't find Anne in his crate. He was, however, huddled close to the dog in his crate. Viljoen and Greube claimed that they "underestimated the kitten's ability to wriggle itself through the door of the cage he was placed in." "Since the little dog was so frail, we never thought he posed a threat to the kitten, but when we first saw them together, there was definitely a moment of panic, as some dogs don't react well to cats and vice versa," the owner told the publication. 

But as soon as the staff saw how gentle Anne was with Ginger and how much they appeared to care for one another, all of their worries vanished. The staff attempted to separate the two again, but it didn't work because the duo would find ways to be with each other. That was it after Anne and Ginger made the decision that they belonged together. Since they are now sharing a crate full-time, Anne and Ginger couldn't be happier. Being with Ginger seems to be assisting Anne's recovery and providing him strength. Anne was very frail when he first arrived at the hospital.

With these two, "yours, mine, and ours" is undoubtedly the case, according to Viljoen and Greube. They adore cuddling and even sharing meals. Even though the kitten has toys, Ginger's tail is his favorite to chase.
