'Showing up matters, no matter who you are.'
Unexpected friendships represent the best of their kind — you can develop them with a classmate you’ve never spoken to before, a passerby you see every day, or a co-passenger who takes the same train as you. These relationships blossom when you least expect them to, making a lasting impression on whoever is open to receiving the love. Holly Bratcher — @hollypaigebratcher on TikTok — posted a video of her niece with her close friend, their bus driver. The visuals convey a general sense of wholesomeness, restoring our gradually decaying faith in lasting friendships.
Bratcher posted a video of her 6-year-old niece at her kindergarten graduation party. The video features the little girl sitting at a table with the school bus driver, having a conversation. The delighted girl’s expressions tell us how happy and safe she feels in his presence as the man mirrors the happiness and sits by her throughout the clip. She told Newsweek, "Out of everyone at her party — family, kids — she chose to sit with him the whole time." She mentioned how their pure bond developed naturally over the year since he had been her school bus driver. “She loves this man," she added. "She gives him a hug every time she gets picked up and dropped off."
Bratcher’s niece insisted on inviting the man to the private family party, but no one in the room had expected their bond to be this deep and heart-touching. "I was sitting there trying not to cry because it was so pure and sweet seeing them talk and play games," Bratcher said. "She didn't leave his side the entire time, almost. They acted like best friends." This innocent bond makes us believe that friendships can bloom in the most unexpected places, with the most unexpected people.
Highlighting the beauty and benefits of unexpected friendships in our lives, an article by Vanishya — @varnam67.krish — on Medium shares, “There are so many people whom I have not met yet. So many of them are out there who hold the potential of having such friendships. We never know at which stage of life we get to meet some stranger and form such an unbreakable bond with them. But these bonds are the ones that are cherished the most.”
According to a study by Kathryn Ashton and others, “Individuals with no access to a trusted adult were substantially less likely than those with access to report childhood resilience resources.” On the contrary, “Those with access to an always-available trusted adult were 5.6 times more likely to have had supportive friends and 5.7 times more likely to have been given opportunities to develop skills to succeed in life, compared to those with no access to a trusted adult.” This proves that children who have adult friends can develop better than those who don’t.
After watching the wholesome video, comments started pouring in. @ratatatkattt shared, “[I] invited my bus driver to church once when I was 10 and he ended up getting baptized. He saved a dance for me at his wedding,” and @cassie_0089 wrote, “My niece invited her 80-year-old crossing guard to her birthday and she showed up.” Finally, @michelerenea expressed, “Proof that showing up matters no matter who you are.”
