'I knew everyone had insecurities that often come out by judging others,' she said.
You don’t always realize the impact of your actions in the moment, and what normally feels like a simple instinct, such as helping carry someone's bags, holding the door, or just having a conversation, can end up saving their lives. In fact, a study published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology found that people tend to underestimate the emotional impact their kind actions have on others. Sometimes, that one choice becomes a turning point for someone you didn’t even know needed it. Madelyn Smith shared such a moment on her Instagram @madelynsmith_mindset, describing how her random act of concern in eighth grade ended up saving a student’s life.
That day, Smith had been called to the principal's office without any prior notice. "I had no idea what was waiting for me," she wrote in the caption. When she walked in, the principal and counselor asked her to sit down. "Then they shared something that left me stunned," she added. They told her a student at school had been planning to take his own life, but changed his mind. "And it was because of something I did," she said. She explained further that weeks earlier, she had a casual conversation with the student. "He mentioned — almost casually — that he wasn’t sure life was worth living," she recalled, adding, "I honestly didn’t know how serious he was, but I decided to tell the school counselor, just in case."
She later learned that when the counselor called him in, they let him know someone had cared enough to say something. "He broke down in tears and said, 'It’s nice to know someone even cared about me,'" she described. Looking back, she connected that moment to a decision she made years ago. "In 5th grade, I left a friend group that didn’t feel right for me, and I decided I wanted to be known for one thing — kindness. Not popularity, not social status, just kindness," she wrote. She started saying hi to everyone in the halls and without caring about "looking 'cool.'" "I saw every person as valuable. I recognized even from a young age that in God’s eyes, we are all His children — nobody is above anyone else," she shared.
Though some people judged her for it, she kept going. "Their comments never brought me down. Even from that young age, I knew everyone had insecurities that often come out by judging others," she said, adding, "That mindset to let things roll off my shoulders gave me the confidence to lead with kindness, to see others for who they truly are. And in that moment, it helped save a life." She concluded with an inspiring message, "It’s amazing what happens when you choose to look outside of yourself. Kindness can transform lives — including your own."
The story clicked with many, and they expressed how, sometimes, just one person can make all the difference. @evphxricmars commented, "I was the person who had to go to the counselor. I'm forever grateful for the friend who spoke up when I couldn’t." @dgplumm wrote, "This conversation is so powerful. I’d like to share the important parts with my little granddaughters. You’re never too young to learn the importance of being kind!" @kailiebobailey25 said, "As someone who struggles with their mental health daily, I wish I had someone like you in my life." @kristinminassian added, "I left my friends group in 5th grade for the same reasons! Best decision ever! And bless you for saving that boy’s life! It just takes one person to care!"
