As a police officer took their Grandma to James, Lucas immediately hugged his sister to calm her down. 'We did the right thing'

The afternoon sun had barely begun to dip when 10-year-old Lucas and his younger sister Lucy walked into their home in Gillette, Wyoming. Although they expected nothing more than a typical post-school routine, they were stunned to see their mother in critical condition. Well, their 35-year-old mother, Sarah James, had almost collapsed on the floor after a possibly fatal allergic reaction to some medication, Inside Edition reported on September 30, 2025. While most kids would've panicked in such a situation, Lucas and Lucy acted swiftly, saving their mother's life.
James, who had recently undergone knee surgery, suffered an allergic reaction to her medication. She was visibly struggling when Lucas and Lucy walked in, and she saw her almost collapse. Seeing them back from school, James immediately asked them to call her best friend and grandpa and inform them about her. Following her instructions, Lucas immediately informed their family friend and his grandparents. Later, when the police arrived, the doorbell camera captured the siblings sharing an emotional moment.
As their grandma walked with a police officer to James, Lucas immediately hugged his sister to calm her down. "We did the right thing," he reassured Lucy. Moreover, while recalling the horrifying incident, the 10-year-old said that as he saw his mom collapse, all he wanted to do was spring into action and call for help. "I got to keep Lucy calm, and she got to keep me calm," he added, recounting his inner turmoil.

Soon, their grandfather also arrived and tried to relax the kids. Although they did what they could, Lucas and Lucy were still worried about their mom. But soon the officer returned with good news and told them James was okay. If it weren't for the siblings, James probably wouldn't have survived. In fact, praising her kids, she said with tears in her eyes, "They are just amazing — they are so smart."
Although Lucas and Lucy's timely intervention saved their mother, research says this is rare. In fact, according to a national survey released by Underwriters Laboratories, despite almost 90% of surveyed kids claiming to know what to do in an emergency such as fire, only 47% chose to act smartly.

John Drengenberg, director of Consumer Safety at Underwriters Laboratories, however, isn't surprised by this. As a matter of fact, he said it's the parents' responsibility to guide and teach kids what to do during such an emergency. This indicates how important it is for kids to know how to call the police or even give CPR. If the kids know these things, perhaps thousands of lives across the globe can be saved. "It's natural to get confused when sudden danger demands quick action. Children may say they know what to do, but as parents we need to be diligent and provide them with the guidance, resources, and skills to make the right choices," he explained.

Meanwhile, reacting to the wholesome story, @offthesidelines wrote, "The fact that through their own terror and tears the siblings were still able to reach out, talk to, and comfort each other speaks volumes on their strength and how they were raised — such a sweet family! Honestly, I saw the video initially on IG and immediately started tearing up when they started crying. I'm glad their mom's ok." Similarly, @rose-does-stuff-and-things commented, "Amazing kids! They’ve got a great grandpa, too — that 'I’m here' is such a stable and reassuring thing to hear in a chaotic and scary situation."
