The kids had a mixture of unique and thoughtful perspectives and downright hilarious answers about same-sex marriage.
Explaining something to a kid can be quite different from explaining it to an adult. However, kids might be more open to new ideas and accepting of different people. Jimmy Kimmel Live asked kids on the street about gay marriage and whether gay people should be able to get married, and they received quite a few interesting answers. Some kids left the internet in splits with their funny perceptions of marriage.
Jimmy Kimmel shared how many people wondered how they could explain same-sex marriage to their kids and if they would be able to understand the same. So they went out and asked a bunch of kids about their opinion on same-sex marriage. A person first asked a little girl if she knew what same-sex marriage is. "It's when two men and two women get married," the girl answered. They asked if the girl thought that four people were getting married in this scenario, but she didn't think so. Another boy answered, "I know nothing about it." Yet another kid was asked why two people would get married. "Because they love each other and they just feel a connection," the boy responded.
"Do you know what makes someone gay?" the person questioned. "Yeah...I got a broken leg," a girl answered as her mom laughed. "When should two people get married?" a kid remarked, "In the afternoon." Another girl defined marriage as "when a husband and a wife get married." The person further probed, "Then what do you think gay marriage is?" She explained, "When a boy and a boy get married and a girl and a girl get married." The girl also added that it could be hard to understand for some kids, but not for her. "Do you think anybody should be able to get married?" she pointed out. "If they are old enough." The person wondered if the girl wanted to get married, and she admitted that she would want to get married when she was 30.
Another boy felt that a person would want to get married, "because they are pregnant." Yet another boy said that gay marriage was, "when a boy marries another boy." The reporter asked if it could be a girl marrying another girl. "No," the kid replied flatly. "What would you call it if a girl married another girl?" he responded. "Lesbianism."
They questioned him if anybody should be able to get married. He replied, "Yes, because if they want to, they should be able to." However, the boy didn't want to get married for a specific reason: "because in marriage the other person is entitled to any money one person has."
People took to the comments section of the video to express their thoughts on the answers the kids gave. @iffatrizvi9531 wrote, "The girl who wants to get married at 30, knows what's up. All her opinions were so balanced and well thought out." @yafi6214 commented, "'In the afternoon' and 'because they’re pregnant' answers were hilarious, kids’ minds are wondrous! Very unique and interesting perspective." @bernardwylie9760 remarked, "I love the one kid who answered 'I know nothing about that yet,' with a full Cheshire grin as if to say 'I’m not supposed to know about this yet, but I do.'"
