The celebrity beside her was none other than the ex-chairman of Hermès, and he listened and delivered.

A woman’s purse holds a powerful lot; it has the power to transform, to aid, and so much more. It’s no wonder there is such hype around the purse a woman carries. The late actor and singer, Jane Birkin, was also particular when it came to her handbag. According to Forbes, the singer, who passed away in 2023, held on to a Portuguese basket she purchased at a London market. Unfortunately, before she could fly to London again, her basket was destroyed, and her substitute bag caused quite the chaos aboard her flight. So much so that she complained to the passenger beside her. Call it fate, but that man happened to be Hermès' chairman, Jean-Louis Dumas, who turned her name into a legacy in the fashion world, while solving her problem.
The actor found herself dependent on the basket for all her outings, be it grocery shopping or the Red Carpet. Any woman knows that if they have a favorite, it’s going with them everywhere. However, Birkin’s husband, Jacques Doillon, was fed up with seeing her carry a basket around. So he decided to destroy it, unfortunately, right before her flight from Paris to London. She had to haphazardly take a substitute that failed to do the job. Her things spilled when she got onto the plane, and it led to a conversation that would change the course of the fashion world.

Sharing the experience herself in a conversation, as shared by @news.nanews, the woman mentioned how the person beside her said she should have pockets for her bag to avoid the blunder. According to Hermès, Birkin complained that bags didn’t suit the needs of young mothers. She said something along the lines of, “Hermès doesn’t make bags with pockets.” Responding to her worry, the man himself, the great-great-grandson of the luxury brand’s founder, Thierry Hermès, said, “I am Hermès.” The duo got into a conversation, and as any good brand would do, Dumas listened to her problems in exchange for making a bag that fixed them all.

Birkin had a simple request: a bigger bag with pockets, and she drew it on a napkin. The then-chairman took this feedback to his company and got started. Birkin later received a call that a mockup of her requested bag was ready. When she came to look at what was in progress, she learned that the makers were nearly obsessed with her idea. Then came Dumas’ golden request — to name the bag after her. Birkin chose the clasps and closures, as well as the leather, and in 1984, the Birkin collection was launched by Hermès.

According to Fortune, the collection, today, stands at a value higher than gold. The resale prices are getting higher, increasing their value beyond the set price of $12,000. James Firestein, founder of luxury resale and authentication platform OpenLuxury, noted, "The resale value of the Birkin and Kelly bags over the past 10 years has outpaced gold.” Prive Porter shared some interesting statistics. As per financial analyses, with a 14.2% annual rate of appreciation, the Birkin bags have outperformed gold, stocks, real estate, and nearly all luxury goods.

Having worked with 43 luxury brands, Firestein is exquisitely fond of the Hermès collections. Designed for its productivity, around 75% of buyers are actually using the bags, while 25% have them stored as a solid investment. “It’s similar to buying a Picasso and holding it in your home, because you can look at it, you can enjoy it,” he added. @jasonoppenheim wrote, “She’s as classy as the bag or perhaps the bag is as classy as she.” @rob.campin added, “Amazing, without that upgrade the Birkin would never have existed.”
