The woman explained how certain customers tip bait by putting down huge tip amounts for an order only to reduce them later on.
Even though people who provide services from serving food at restaurants to delivering products at home deserve incentives for their job, a debate over tipping culture has been raging on for the past couple of years in America and other parts of the world. This has also led to customers sharing their experiences after not tipping servers enough, as well as delivery persons expressing displeasure about being denied tips. A similar thing happened to an Uber delivery driver, Dawn Garza who goes by @dawngarza, while delivering an order that had a tip of $21 attached to it. As soon as she delivered the order, the tip was reduced significantly, leaving her in shock. Garza described the practice as "tip baiting" and explained why it really needs to stop.
The text overlay of the video read, "Uber can't keep letting people bait tip. Shopped a whole $143 for Dart in Dallas for $21 upfront pay and says the customer reduced the tip to nothing and got paid $5.59." The app told her about her tip being reduced. Garza explained, "I just made a delivery here for Uber for Eric. The order was 21 dollars. So when I got here, he got the order 8 minutes early. I shopped for $153 worth of food and snacks for you guys."
"Then Uber tells me, by the way, they took all this money and you only got paid 5 dollars for this trip," she added. Garza wanted to speak to Eric or a manager as there was no reason for them to have taken her money like that. "Unless you are tip-baiting, I don't know why you would do that," she pointed out. The board of the place she had delivered the order to read "Paratransit & Innovative Services." Garza shared, "They do this all the time. They tip bait so that when people take their orders they can be cheap. But this is a business. An operating facility. Like why are you taking away money from hardworking people?" Meanwhile the man who ordered the stuff responded, "I understand what you're saying."
"I haven’t even touched my app since you guys left. So I don’t even know what you’re communicating," he added. Garza however disclosed that her app said otherwise even when the customer refuted her claim. She shared a screenshot from her app where the customer service personnel had written how the customer had reduced the tip after the delivery very clearly. The caption in her post read, "DO BETTER OR Y'ALL GONNA LOSE ALL THE DRIVERS! AND BE BACK TO PICKING UP YOUR OWN S***! Uber needs to stop letting them do this!" People who supported the driver took to the comments section to slam the practice.
@lonevariance commented, "They shouldn’t allow people to remove tips. If u wanna remove a tip, contact Uber and give them a valid reason why!" @xoxoashleylynn wrote, "I work for Uber and when they do that, I call customer service. They don’t do anything, but I get mad." @girlmom33461 remarked, "That’s why I started doing laundry on Poplin because of DoorDash Instacart. None of it was making enough money to be worth every single Instacart order I ever did. I never felt like I was paid enough." @bucaflounder shared, "Tip after job. The app should work like that. You don’t see anything up front."
