Weddings may differ across cultures, but they often come with certain expectations for guests. Yet, unexpected situations can arise, as one woman discovered at a colleague's wedding. Reddit user u/HistoricalWarning31 shared her experience of being assured by her colleague that there would be no costs for guests. To her surprise, she encountered a menu with prices at the reception.

"Recently, my colleague invited me to her wedding. I was super excited and happy for her. Just in case, I asked her if there were any guest fees - she said 'No, you don't need to pay me anything,'" the post began. Everything went well on the wedding day until dinner time. "To my shock, I was presented with a wedding menu that had prices on it. (For example: Steak ---- $50) Everything was ridiculously expensive, including the vegetarian options." The woman wanted to question her colleague as she had been informed that she wouldn't have to pay for anything but decided against it as she didn't want to embarrass the bride in front of everyone.

"However, the only other option was to simply not eat, as I didn't bring enough money for both a meal and a ride back. But this was completely unfavorable as I had skipped my lunch to 'save space' for the wedding meal and was pretty hungry," the 25-year-old shared. "Suddenly, I remembered that I saw a McDonald's about five minutes away from the hotel. As tactfully as I could, I asked the bride if I could make a quick stop at McDonald's as I didn't bring enough money for the reception meal," she recounted and promised the bride to return for the gift ceremony and cake. The person thought that the bride would simply agree with her but she got really upset.

"She said that she put in so much effort to get this 'Michelin-star restaurant service' yet I still wasn't happy. I was trying to bring her down by saying that I'd rather eat McDonald's," the woman expressed. She tried to explain that she didn't mean it that way and just didn't have enough cash with her at the moment. "She then scoffed, saying - 'Who's fault is that?'" At this point, the colleague got really pissed. She told the bride, "You were the one who lied that I didn't need to pay anything!" The bride replied, "What I meant was there is no attendance fee! You literally assumed that you'd get a free five-course dinner. Wow, you're cheaper than I thought!" and told the woman to leave her wedding. The woman was quite hurt and had a big Mac on her way.

She told her boyfriend about what went down but he believed that she chose the wrong time to be stingy and was at fault. Her friends seemed to agree with that point of view as well. So the woman took to the internet to get other people's perspectives on the situation. u/Arichoke-8951 wrote, "I've never been to a wedding where the guests pay for their meal. You were not wrong." u/realfactsmatter commented, "If you DO expect guests to pay for their meals, do not act surprised/offended if they decide not to and go elsewhere. Especially considering how bad wedding food sometimes can be."

u/Fun-Office-2954 remarked, "I’m planning my wedding right now with my fiancé and feeding our guests is the only thing that we are insistent on. This was ridiculous. If she hadn’t told you a lie about it, it wouldn’t have been as big a deal but it is still bizarre."
