The viral video shows how staff skillfully ignored a rude customer, highlighting the rise in bad behavior since the pandemic.
If a debate around tipping culture and the widespread speculation about AI replacing servers at fast-food chains wasn't enough, employees at eateries often have to deal with entitled customers throwing tantrums. Whether it is someone cutting in line at the drive-thru to save a spot or spitting on staff because they can't get a table during a pandemic, plenty of "Karen" moments have gone viral online. Recently a Subway employee faced a similar customer and the entire commotion was shared by TikTok user Charlie aka @charlie_kincade. The clip showed a woman at Subway getting aggressive while arguing with the employee and ordering them around.
"Finish my sandwich!" the woman in the pink and white striped shirt screamed at the employee. "No, I won't finish it because you need to respect me," the employee can be heard responding. The customer then said, "Well, you need to respect your customers. I'll tell them you don't respect your customers. Would you finish my sandwich?" At this point, another employee asked Charlie what she wanted to order and another customer received service as the entitled woman was ignored.
"Hi, may I help you?" another employee asked a different customer, who proceeded to place their order while the irritated customer yelled "Finish my sandwich!" yet again. She finally left the outlet since no one was listening to her even when she told employees to call their supervisor. Generally, servers are advised to "stay calm and polite" but stand firm on company policies. But, since this consumer insisted on creating trouble, the Subway employee found an effective way to deal with her with indifference. There has been a noticeable rise in rude customers since the COVID-19 pandemic, as reported by Teen Vogue.
This video has garnered over 4 million views. It is captioned, "I felt so bad for the server. She was doing her job and this woman started yelling at her." People on the platform applauded how other customers and employees handled the situation. "I did customer service for 5 years and it's shocking how customers think they can treat employees," commented @latinoenigma. "I used to be a fast food worker and politely ignoring rude customers works every time. It takes 2 to argue. They eventually just leave," added @aromatootherapy.
Many others applauded the server for being calm. @ljackson2003 said, "Ms. Subway, that was the best ignore job I've ever seen in my life! She couldn't believe it." @freeatlast791 shared, "That's how you handle it! Don't even respond to him. Don't make anything for them just let them go." @reahhagues chimed in, "Who thinks it's okay to treat someone like that and just stand there expecting to still be paid attention to?"

Another example of a server dealing with unruly customers was shared on Reddit by u/ZeroPenguinParty who wrote about Kate, a server at a steakhouse who faced a difficult group of young consumers. They made unreasonable complaints, like wanting their steak well-done after ordering it medium rare, claiming there was a lipstick stain on a glass, and repeatedly saying they didn't have forks. Despite their antics, Kate's manager gave them a free meal.
The group ordered drinks and then ran out without paying. Luckily, the manager didn't make Kate pay for the bill. Eight months later, Kate and her friends went to a restaurant and were served by the same rude "customer." Kate and her friends copied the bad behavior and told the restaurant manager the truth with proof and Kate got her meal for free while the cost was recovered from the server's tips.
