Dining out isn’t always smooth — orders get mixed up or delayed, reservations get double booked, and more — but most customers brush it off. In Indiana, when a woman asked for the drink she originally ordered, she wasn’t expecting to pay extra for it, especially not in the way the receipt described. She posted the incident on Reddit under the username u/smokeymctokerson, where it sparked a mix of laughter and debate. The woman shared that she was out and about grabbing pizza and beers with friends at her local pizzeria, explaining the situation in the comments, "I ordered a Miller Lite and she [the server] gave me a Bud Light. But since she had already opened the Bud Light while walking towards my table, she couldn’t just swap it out."

She said, "I wasn’t even going to complain, but my friend spoke up, forcing me to point out her mistake." To make up for the mistake, the server gave her the Bud Light for free and still brought the Miller Lite she originally asked for. She thought that was the end of it — that is, until the bill came. The full check amounted to $24.78, with a $5 charge labeled "bitching fee." The customer was aghast, never having experienced something like this before — she went on to write, "there wasn’t any bitching involved so I don’t know what that was about." She didn’t mention the name of the restaurant but made it clear that she didn’t confront the server. "I didn’t even bring it to her attention and just paid and left. I’m sure if I had, she would have been absolutely mortified," she explained, as per the New York Post.

She added more context to the incident in the comments, saying, "I’ve bitched enough in my life to know I’ve earned it. With that said, I don’t believe I was bitchy in that moment." The post immediately drew attention for the absurdity of the charge and sparked plenty of jokes and serious takes alike, with several commenters leaning into the humor of the situation. u/jaxdlg wrote, "If you complain about that fee would you get another fee?" u/zarkon joked, "If you want to bitch about it that will be $5." u/rotcivwg followed up with, "And here you are bitching," to which u/smokeymctokerson replied, "I paid off my first fine so why not rack up another $5 worth of bitching? I've got nothing better going on." u/Sharkovnikov quipped, "This is coming off my bill or they ain’t getting a dime."

u/oopsie-mybad chimed in, "$22 for 3 beers, a pepperoni pizza, and bitching seems like a pretty good deal. Where is this combo?" Others responded with concern about what the charge could mean legally. u/Law_Student said, "This is funny, but also probably a crime. You can't make up fake fees and then charge people's cards. It's wire fraud." Some questioned why the user didn’t push back, with u/kejovo suggesting, "This might be a lawsuit. Was NO Bitching clearly posted at the entrance? If not, you should sue. Just don't know a lawyer that would put up with your bitch a**." u/Silvertongued99 asked, "As a business, can they realistically charge this? Like, how is this not inflating the bill for profit?" While dining outside is an alluring experience, the next time you're out, you may want to clarify what kind of fees the restaurant potentially charges — just so you don't end up with a penalty of your own.
