Internet is rumbling with research and stories that talk about toxic or dramatic in-laws. But three years ago, on the fourth of July, Michel Janse (@michel.c.janse) experienced something that altered her viewpoint on this entirely. In a July 5, 2026, Instagram reel, she shared the metaphor of a reddish checkered dress that she didn’t feel like wearing that day but was adamant about wearing it for the sake of a family get-together. That’s when her in-laws stepped in and made a serendipitous request about the celebration’s dress code. The post has gained 1.7 million views and 102,000 likes so far.

Playful ploy

That day, Janse was visiting her boyfriend’s parents’ house. She didn’t want to wear this red picnic dress but held her wishes and decided to get dressed up in it because it looked appropriate for the occasion. “It's just a day. Like, so what? I'm, I'm gonna wear it,” she told the family when they asked about it. That’s when a message popped up in the family chat group, which urged all the family members to get dressed in white or blue because they were going to capture the occasion in family photos.

'My in-laws saved me'

Janse thought that she wouldn’t be needed in the family photos since she was still the girlfriend, not the wife. But when the family members remained obstinate about her appearance, she changed the dress. Little did she know that all of them knew a secret that was about to be unfolded that day. She was going to be engaged, and she didn’t even know. The family had plotted this playful ploy to ensure that she wouldn’t feel uncomfortable in her engagement photos. “So yeah, they were the real ones. They saved me,” Janse remarked in the reel, adding, “Here I am, three years and 30 pounds later, finally wearing my checkered dress for 4th of July, even though I kinda had to shimmy into it in some areas.”

Relationship with in-laws

A woman’s relationship with her in-laws can either be a source of stress or immense satisfaction. While more studies report on strained relationships between the two parties, some affirm that positive outcomes are possible in this relationship as well. A survey of American women conducted in 2021, cited by the BBC, reported that 50% of daughters-in-law experience high satisfaction with their relationship with their mothers-in-law. Another study published by the National Institutes of Health also found that 86% of the women were close to their husbands’ families.

'They are the real reals'

@chica_rosy commented, “Those are the real reals.” @sweetjazmines said, “That sounds like a great family!” @sandrewpandrew exclaimed, “I’m such a fan of it. They went out of their way to keep the secret, work around it, and do everything in their power, literally, so you could have pictures of your engagement you could be happy with. They refused to allow even the smallest blemish on what they wanted you to have as a cherished memory. I love them.”
