A vintage newspaper report tells the heartwarming tale of a dog who wouldn't let go of his best friend, a cat, going the extra mile.
A home full of pets is filled with infectious energy and positivity. Most pet parents share a special bond with their furry companions amid all the hustle that goes into caring for them. Sometimes, instead of paying attention to their 'hooman,' these adorable fur babies start enjoying each other’s company more. The same bond between a cat and a dog was put on display in a vintage newspaper in Gordon, Nebraska. The incident reported in 1934, involving two furry friends, was shared online by a popular meme-sharing page, "History Cool Kids" (@historycoolkids on Instagram). It was quite unusual when their caregiver and businessman, Billy Jones, preferred spending time with his dog rather than his cat. The dog didn’t like being separated from the cat.
The picture of the advertisement originally published in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram showed how pets were reunited most surprisingly. Jones decided to give away his cat to a friend who lived a mile away from his home in Nebraska, as reported by the newspaper. However, little did he realize that the dog and the cat had become close friends by then and were not willing to let go of each other’s company. Reportedly, the dog was hailed as more valuable than the cat. “Billy Jones, Gordon businessman, has decided it's ‘love me, love the cat!’” it read.
“Jones had a valuable dog and an ordinary house cat for a long time. Recently, he decided to give the cat to a friend who lives a mile from the Jones' home,” the archived news piece continued. To Jones’ surprise, after he parted ways with his cat, it was his dog that somehow left his home unannounced. Moreover, the dog was later found missing for at least 48 long hours.
According to the newspaper, a day after the cat was moved to another place, the dog disappeared.
“Next day, the dog disappeared, and about two days later, both pets arrived home together,” announced the paper. It was not at all surprising that the dog spent two days not only locating his displaced friend-cum-companion but also bringing him back. The dog had brought the cat with him to their house, sending a powerful message to their owner.
“Dog fetches cat back, owner will keep them both,” read the title of the archived news article. It gave away the fact that the owner was moved by his dog’s kind gesture and backtracked from his original decision to let the cat go. But before reversing his stance, Jones attempted once more to take the cat away from his home. “A week later, Jones took the cat to a place several miles away,” it added. As astounding as it may sound, the animals were somehow reunited again. “As before, the dog disappeared. Three days later, the dog came trotting home, the cat close behind.”
Ultimately, it boiled down to a point where Jones had no choice but to keep them both. The wholesome post shedding light on the furry companions’ reunion managed to draw widespread attention on social media, garnering over 6k likes. Among the countless reactions it received, @slang174 pointed out, “Ordinary house cat? The dog clearly didn’t think so.” “Well, what did he expect? You can’t separate them when they’re bonded,” @robyn__nesbitt echoed similar sentiments.
