Osbourne's family confirmed the singer's passing in a statement on Wednesday morning, calling it a loss beyond words. "It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning. He was with his family and surrounded by love," they said, as per Sky News.
His death comes less than three weeks after a massive farewell concert in Birmingham, where Osbourne performed alongside the original lineup of Black Sabbath. The July 5 event, dubbed "Back to the Beginning," marked the first time in two decades that Ozzy reunited on stage with Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward. "You've no idea how I feel — thank you from the bottom of my heart," he told the teary-eyed crowd of 42,000, while seated on a throne at Villa Park. Sharon Osbourne had earlier called it the "perfect farewell," a one-night return planned around the limitations of his health, including Parkinson's disease and lingering complications from a fall in 2019.
The viral video of Osbourne's dedication to Sharon and his fight with addiction got his fans very emotional. "Words cannot describe how happy I feel that he got to do this one last time. It was like he was holding on for this last performance, and was at peace after. RIP Lord of Darkness," wrote u/Dusty-Foot-Phil. "This will go down as one of the most iconic performances of all time. Incredible stuff. Gives me chills," added ahdidi413.
Born John Michael Osbourne in Birmingham on December 3, 1948, Ozzy rose from a working-class upbringing to become a defining force in heavy metal. As frontman of Black Sabbath, his voice powered genre-shaping hits like "Paranoid" and "War Pigs" before his departure in 1979. "We knew we didn't really have a choice but to sack him," bassist Geezer Butler later wrote in his memoir "Into the Void." Over the course of his career, Osbourne sold more than 75 million albums, was inducted into both the UK Music Hall of Fame and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and received multiple Grammy Awards.
Ozzy launched a successful solo career with "Blizzard of Ozz" and "Diary of a Madman," delivering anthems like "Crazy Train" and building a wild onstage persona. In the 2000s, his reality series 'The Osbournes' made him a pop culture icon. Despite declining health, he continued to surprise fans with appearances, including a performance at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. He also holds a star on both the Hollywood Walk of Fame and Birmingham’s Broad Street. He is survived by his wife, Sharon; their children, Aimee, Kelly, and Jack; and two children from his first marriage, Jessica and Louis, along with several grandchildren.
The tributes following his death reflect the scale of his influence. Metallica posted a photo of the band with Osbourne on X, marked only with a broken heart emoji. Black Sabbath’s official account shared a photo from the farewell gig with the caption, "Ozzy Forever!" Ozzy's last performance made waves on various platforms after his death, including Reddit, after it was shared by u/satu_23, and many paid their tributes to the legendary musician in the comments. u/darbs-face commented, "Never thought I would tear up listening to Oz, but this is magical and RIP legend!!!" u/Calm_Bat1073 quipped, "He’s home now, Mama.
