Dad left mom after 32 years for a younger woman. When he came crawling back 2 years later — she looked up from her plate and said one thing

Two years after the divorce, he requested her to reconsider their relationship, but by then, it was too late

Marriage does not take away a person’s freedom or identity, but years of compromises, caregiving, domestic responsibilities, and pressure to keep everyone happy can slowly make someone lose sight of themselves. Women, especially, often end up carrying the emotional weight of these expectations. After 32 years of marriage, Tracy Bidwell (@tabtcbbc) found herself starting over when her husband left her for a 27-year-old woman. But instead of letting the divorce break her, she rebuilt her life so completely that years later, her ex-husband wanted another chance. In a May 26 post on Instagram Threads, their daughter Amelia (@ameliadavis.0030) recorded how her mother’s life transformed after the split.

Blessing in disguise

The situation arose when Amelia’s father fell for a 27-year-old woman and left Bidwell because he wanted to “finally be happy.” "My mother didn’t scream. Didn’t beg. Didn’t even argue. She just quietly said, 'Okay,'" the daughter wrote. Little did she expect that the separation was a blessing in disguise. The divorce propelled her life into a positive trajectory. Over the next year, she learned everything from online banking to eating alone in a restaurant and traveling with friends. She took dance classes and started posting vacation photos with captions like “Life begins again.”

On the flip side, the divorce didn’t end well for Bidwell’s husband. He kept calling Amelia to gossip about his new girlfriend, saying that she was “immature” and “always on social media.” Two years after the divorce, he asked his wife whether she’d like to reconsider their relationship. According to Amelia’s description, Bidwell laughed so hard she had to take her glasses off. He kept telling her things like “You seem different.” She was thriving in ways no one had expected.

One night after the dance class, a man walked Bidwell to her car, and her ex-husband "nearly swallowed his tongue." At the end of the day, he drifted into a resentful and pitiful mood and kept talking about the divorce like something that happened to him and not something that he chose himself. “He’ll sit there sighing dramatically, saying things like, ‘I lost my best friend,’” described Amelia. On Thanksgiving 2025, he brought a ring for Bidwell and tried one last time to get her back, but she wasn’t coming back for anything. “That’s because I spent 32 years lowering my standards,” she bluntly stated, “I have never seen a grown man become quiet so fast.”

Towards freedom and independence

In a comment on the thread, Bidwell confessed that although it took a lot of work and emotion to live alone and move on, it all turned out positively for her. “Now I'm fiercely independent,” she exclaimed, “I'm not against men or relationships, but I don't want either unless they genuinely enhance my life.”

In a study published in the Journal of Family Psychology, researchers analyzed 1,639 people (approximately 50.3% men and 49.7% women) over 10 years. They found that women in low-quality marriages experience significant gains in life satisfaction after a divorce. Their happiness notably increases as compared to those who stay married. Another survey of 10,000 people, published by Kingston University in Economica, revealed that women reported being significantly more content for up to five years post-divorce compared to their baselines during marriage.

In response to Amelia’s post, hundreds of people chimed in to echo the same insight. @from_nora_with_love said, “It’s a scientific fact that divorced women have a better quality of life and they live longer. Whereas divorced men tend to live shorter lives and are less happy.” @whathereallymeanss reflected, “It’s almost always the woman who ends up much happier after losing the burden of a man, even if she wasn’t the one who wanted the split. Suddenly, she has a lot less work to do, more free time, more freedom to direct her own life, and more peace. It makes one wonder why most women ever choose to pair up with men at all.”
