Karen Carratura thought that a 20% tip was way too much to give every single time, so she confronted him.

People have different views about tipping culture, but at the end of the day, it’s about your intention to reward a person’s service and effort. A woman named Karen Carratura (@hashtagkarenag) was confused about her husband, John’s, persistent habit of “overtipping” whenever he went to a restaurant. She was baffled to see the man leave a huge tip, sometimes overbearingly grand amounts. She decided to confront him and ask why he was so bent on leaving a big tip every single time. His revelation moved her to tears and has left the internet with a whole new perspective.

The woman recorded her husband leaving a 20% tip after one of their meals at a restaurant. She found it absurd and confronted him on the spot to ask why he left a $25 tip on the meal. “John, it’s too much,” Carratura concerningly said. John seemed embarrassed and awkward with her bringing up the topic right there, but assured her that they would discuss it outside the restaurant. As soon as they left, the woman brought it up again, stating that it wasn’t the best idea to be leaving such a huge tip all the time. John first called her out and said that they “shouldn’t even be having this conversation in the restaurant in the first place,” and added that it was “disrespectful.”

The tipping culture has drastically changed, and with more places expecting tips, customers are getting worked up about what the right amount is to give. According to the Pew Research Center, around 34% of Americans have no idea whether they should be tipping at a particular place at all. 33% say they’re not sure how much they should be giving. 92% of Americans noted that they would always leave a tip when they sit down at a restaurant. However, a majority expect to leave only 15% or less. It’s no surprise that Carratura thought her husband was overdoing it, but he had his reason — a considerable one at that.

When Carratura asked why it came so willingly to him to leave a big tip, he revealed an unexpected reason. “I know there were times when I for sure didn’t tip enough because I had no money,” he remarked. He further added that there were instances where he couldn’t even afford to pay the entire bill. “There was a time when the bill was $70 and I left $63 and a few cigarettes,” he recalled. Though he wanted to, his financial circumstances at the time weren’t good enough for him to leave a tip, and so he was only trying to make up for it in any possible way he could.

People were touched by the man’s reasoning, and that he’d even considered all of it and thought about all those servers from when he couldn’t pay them. @itspandadan said, “John has seen struggle and he understands it. Now John is up and he's helping out. We need more Johns.” @johan_arteaga added, “John is a guy! As a server, having that ONE table that over tips can really make your night better. @shapesofcolors added, “This is super. I like his way of thinking. Good guy.”
