'Only a mom could've come up with that'

When marriage ends, it is always messy, but nothing invites chaos quite like a partner who vanishes without a trace. This leaves the other in a chaotic fog of confusion and unresolved anger, as Mackinlee Waddell (@mackinleew) experienced after her husband left. For two years, she had questions until he returned, not for closure, but to retrieve his coats through lawyers. Although Waddell wanted to avoid drama, her mom devised a clever plan for revenge, which Waddell shared on Instagram on April 27, 2026, garnering over 1.3 million views.
The roots of this entire story trace back to the end of 2022, when Waddell was out for coffee and received a breakup text from her husband. By the time she got home, he was gone. He had packed up all of his belongings and vanished without any warning or conversation. Following this abrupt departure, the husband cut off Waddell completely. For the couple of years that followed, she lived in the dark with an intense mental toll on her.
Although her husband eventually contacted her, he did so only to ask about the coats he had left, not directly. Instead, he chose the legal route. With him now living in Chicago and working as an actor, he needed the coats, as the weather was dropping in the Windy City. While Waddell didn't want anything to do with this man and was ready to hand over his coats, when she told her mom about the request, she couldn't help but get back at this man for what he did to her daughter. So, she plotted a plan, hoping to strike where it'd hurt him the most.

Knowing her daughter's ex-husband was an actor obsessed with maintaining a shredded, superhero physique, the mother suggested tailoring the coats exactly two sizes too small. Upon hearing her mother's diabolical mental warfare plan, Waddell was left speechless. "I could have never come up with that. Only a mom could've come up with that," she said. She then added that this would mentally haunt her ex-husband for years.

Nonetheless, even though the "mama bear's" revenge plot was terrific, Waddell ultimately chose not to go through with it. She took the high road, sending back the coats to Chicago unaltered. But at the same time, she maintained immense respect for her mother's fiercely protective instinct. Regardless, Waddell's entire exchange, or rather the lack of it, highlights the modern-day issue of ghosting, which is increasing day by day, especially in romantic relationships.
As it turns out, Waddell isn't the only adult who has had to face ghosting in recent times. On the contrary, according to a survey held by Forbes Health, about 76% of people out of the 5,000 participants have either been ghosted or have ghosted someone while dating. What's even more concerning is that out of these 60%, people also claimed to have been ghosted previously. Moreover, the study also delved into the mental aspects of ghosting, as nearly 39% of people who were ghosted confirmed feeling inadequate, while 22% expressed anger.

That said, people believe that Waddell was easy on her husband and could've acted on her mother's plan. @samanthabeata wrote, "When my mom caught my dad cheating, 38 years ago, she snipped stitches in the center seam of all his pants. Every time he sat down, he would split his pants open. Diabolical." Meanwhile, @theflamingowiththelaugh took things further up a notch, suggesting, "As a tailor, I LOVE this. But even better would be altering one sleeve to be shorter on one coat. Moving the buttons over so they don’t quite line up with the holes. Putting gel packs in the collar so that they freeze on the neck. Things that don’t show the alt as much as taking it down a size."
