HOA demanded he ruin his 'too perfect' lawn for making neighbors look bad. Then his attorney found an 'HOA secret'—and he dared them to complain again

Most people don't get complaints if they do the job right, but lawn-care creator @thelawnglowup received a formal notification letter from his HOA. On June 23, 2026, he took to TikTok to reveal the HOA's unusual reasoning. Apparently, the Board of Directors took issue with the way he mowed his lawn and warned him not to do it again. Instead of backing down, the creator simply said that there's more to come. The video went viral and garnered 3.4 million views, 136,600 likes, and 13,000 comments. His latest update was posted on September 9, 2026.

'Neighboring lawns adversely affected by comparison'

The creator started by reading the letter: "Dear homeowner... Following a recent inspection, the Board of Directors has determined that your lawn located at above reference property contains striping patterns that are excessively straight." His violation was "excessive lawn striping. Section 8.4 B." It mentioned "maintaining lawn quality beyond neighborhood expectations. Apparently, the creator's lawn was putting his neighbors' lawns to shame. Furthermore, they described his violations in detail. "Lawn stripes visible from excessive distance. Striping patterns appear professionally maintained. Neighboring lawns adversely affected by comparison."  

A second letter about his 'distracting' lawn

The HOA  gave him a few ways to "correct" his perfect lawn. They suggested he mow in random directions, skip at least one mowing cycle per week, and allow visible wheel marks. Lastly, they told him to refrain from posting photos of his 'perfect yard' on social media. If he continued to "display exceptional lawn striping," they would have to intervene and limit or restrict his mower usage. He concluded the video saying, "You think I was petty before? You wait now. This is gonna get good." He continued mowing his lawn the way he wanted, and on June 27, he received a second letter from the HOA. Their problem now was, "Multiple homeowners have reported slowed vehicles in front of the house observing the lawns. Residents are reminded that landscaping should not create distractions to motorists," the letter read.

Looking for violations

You think the story would've been over, but months later, it continues. On August 9, an attorney was added to the picture. Apparently, they found out that the HOA has no money in its bank accounts. The creator suspected it went to the HOA president's son, who had a lawn mowing business. He admitted that he wouldn't have taken it this far, but the HOA poked and prodded him with various violations. It pushed him to seek legal advice. In a video from August 17, the HOA president demanded the creator pay for the damages to their golf cart because it hit one of his signs. The president claimed that it was on the road, but the creator showed his viewers where the signs were. All of them were clearly off the road, even the mangled one. He said, "Maybe they were too busy looking at the yard. I don't know, looking for another violation." He had hoped the 'saga' would be over, but the HOA president won't put it to rest.

How much should HOAs control?

Americans have mixed feelings about how much authority homeowners associations should have over private property. A 2023 YouGov survey found that 64% supported HOA rules governing noise levels, 50% supported rules for trash and recycling bins, and 46% supported parking restrictions. But majorities opposed HOA rules governing several other areas, including landscaping. In fact, 59% opposed HOA landscaping rules, while 29% supported them. The creator clearly believed his HOA had crossed that line, particularly after what began as a complaint about lawn stripes developed into a months-long dispute.

Admiring the masterpiece

Viewers were astonished by how far the HOA was willing to take the issue. @lightbrightrunning wrote, "This is getting out of control. I’ve never seen an HOA concerned about a beautifully manicured lawn." @alwayzaprilr.2 sarcastically wrote, "So now you can’t have your yard looking great? That’s diabolical."
