Woman’s Hinge date said he was 36 and divorced, but a $25 background check found no record. Then his wife commented on her post

'I have a confession to make. I'm not 36,' Samantha's Hinge date had confessed, which turned out to be just the tip of the iceberg

Most people have had their fair share of wild experiences through online dating. Samantha (@samantha.talks) had, too. After matching with a man named Danny claiming to be 36 years old and freshly divorced, she thought she'd have a nice time. Although she enjoyed a great evening, she couldn't help but notice some inconsistencies in the man's story. This prompted her to dig deeper into the man's background. She paid a $25 fee to a website, only to find zero public records of an actual split. Refusing to give up, she dug further on social media, only to discover something disturbing. Later, she took to TikTok to detail the entire story on October 8, 2024, racking up 134,000 likes.

The innocent first date

After Samantha matched with Danny on Hinge, he presented himself as a 36-year-old freshly divorced man whose life seemed rather uncomplicated. This narrative made him seem like a mature match who had already worked through his previous heartbreak, given that he was separated for two years and divorced for two months. But soon the polished facade began to show cracks. This came to light after Samantha teased him on their first date about being 36 and fitting right into her dating window.

It was right then that he stopped her in her tracks, saying, "I have a confession to make. I'm not 36, I'm 39." What made Samantha skeptical was the fact that he blamed this error on the application. Nonetheless, she asked to see his driver's license, and when she looked at it, she confirmed he was indeed 39 years old. However, this was just a preview of things to come. His behavior grew increasingly bizarre on their subsequent date in Washington, D.C., when Danny announced he had reserved an overnight hotel to stay in the city.

Suspicion increases

When asked about why he made the reservation, Danny justified it by saying, "I just don't want to drive all the way back to Maryland and then commute to Arlington for work tomorrow." However, Samantha knew that his house was just half an hour away. So, this felt like an elaborate cover to avoid taking her anywhere near his residence; still, she went over with him. Troubled by this recurring secrecy, she decided to run a background check on Danny by paying $25 to a website. The search quickly located his Maryland property, yet failed to identify any records of his divorce.

The clerk informed her that they couldn't find anything about his divorce. This was an immediate red flag for Samantha. Nonetheless, with the clues she gathered, Samantha decided to use social media to investigate further. She uploaded his photo alongside all the information in a local Facebook group. It turned out to be the best decision, as shortly after, a woman commented under her post, leaving Samantha shocked. "I'm the wife. Call me," she wrote. Samantha then immediately exchanged numbers with her and gave her a call.

The truth emerges

The woman then laid bare the full extent of Danny's double life. "We are still legally married. We live under the same roof in separate bedrooms, and he refuses to sign any divorce papers," she told Samantha. Moreover, she revealed that this wasn't the first time he had betrayed her, as he had done so countless times dating back several years. Most importantly, his wife told her not only that she knew about her, but also that his morning commute to Arlington was to see another woman he'd been seeing for the past eight years or so.

Appalled by the web of lies, Samantha sent Danny a blistering message confronting him. After which she blocked him everywhere. She even reported this incident to Hinge, which later disabled his dating profile on the platform. Reflecting on the chaos, she advised other women, "If you see a red flag, run; trust your intuition." This incident highlights just how people can misrepresent themselves on dating apps. In fact, according to a Pew Research survey, 71% of online daters believe it's very common for people to lie on dating websites. Meanwhile, 42% have had an overall bad experience dating online.

As for the people, they were impressed that Samantha was able to figure this out pretty quickly. @nikki0172 noted, "You're actually really smart to work this out that quickly, girl." At the same time, @the_og_valpal commented, "Totally understand feeling jaded and needing time away from the dating scene! But important to remember that you did pick up when he was sus and your hunches were right."
