Even with all the atrocities happening in the world, a simple act of kindness is enough to make us believe that good prevails over all evil. Recently, the courage and compassion of everyday people were on full display when a group of heroic passersby jumped into action to save a dog that had fallen into a canal in Manchester. When students Jack Spencer Furmston and Ben Camphor were walking home, they noticed a man struggling with a leash over a wall. When they got closer, they realized that the man, a film director Batu Akyol, was desperately holding onto the leash of his pup, Sumak, who had fallen into Ancoats Canal. “Everyone was panicking,” Camphor recalled. “I couldn't let that dog down and not help, so I put my jumper down and sprung into action—climbing down first.”

The group of brave rescuers, which included five other passersby, quickly sprung into action, with Camphor being the tallest of the group. He was dangled upside down by the legs, so he could reach Sumak, who was desperately holding onto the wall. All the while, Akyol held tightly to the leash to keep his dog from being dragged away. Camphor grabbed the pup's collar with his right hand and placed his left hand under the dog's front legs for support. He was then pulled up by the group, as the pup frantically moved his rear legs in search of solid ground. “I'm a dog owner myself,” Camphor shares, “so there wasn't a chance I was going to leave it on its own, but I couldn't get it the first time.”

Once the pup was safe and sound, the crowd who had gathered around the rescue operation erupted in cheers and applause. Afterward, both the dog and the owner were so relieved that they ran around the canal in celebration. The video of the moving rescue, posted to Twitter by user @Dbelldb1, has earned over 75,000 likes, with dozens praising the efforts of those who put themselves in danger to save Sumak. The heartwarming story of the daring rescue mission of Sumak serves as a kind example of all the amazing things that people can do when they come together in a time of need. The courage and compassion of those who acted quickly to save the pup are truly inspiring and serve as a testament to the power of community.
