On a suspicious trail
It has been so many years since the incident occurred, but even till today, Lisa is grappling with the aftermath, the “proper trauma” as she described it. It was a Wednesday night when her husband of 18 years stepped out of the house, telling her that he was going to meet a friend for a drink at Workman’s Club. Lisa was supposed to meet her own friend. While she was driving around, her friend noticed her husband’s BMW in an area that was not near the pub. When Lisa messaged him, he lied, saying he was still at the pub. So they started following him up the hill. To hinder their search, a Learner’s car rolled in front of their car; they lost him.

Lisa’s friend cleverly took a roundabout and got in line with him. This time, they spotted him hiding his car behind the garage and going inside a house. It turned out it was the house of a woman's mom, a girl he was secretly dating. She was a barmaid at a golf course where he played golf. At first, that tried to dismiss the suspicions about the fact that he was still in his work clothes. But then, something happened that made her go ballistic.
World-shattering realization
They were following him into that house when Lisa received a Snapchat notification. It was from her husband, who asked her where she was. She sent him a picture of the woman's front door and went home, crying. A few days later, she received a message from a woman who introduced herself as the woman's mom, who told her that her husband had been telling them that his wife was a psycho and he hated her. Days went by, and Lisa’s husband changed her Facebook relationship status to “not married.” Worse still, he kept her spinning in an emotional roller coaster, going back and forth between her and the other woman, until Lisa was left exhausted and traumatized beyond repair.
Scar that never heals
While Lisa doubts that she may be going psycho or too hotheaded, she isn’t. Feelings like these are normal for anyone who has experienced infidelity. According to a research report by California State University, being cheated on has multiple consequences for the mental health of the individual. The research showed that about 5% to 12% of married individuals engage in infidelity-related behavior.
This behavior often leaves a partner wounded with symptoms like posttraumatic stress disorder, intrusive thoughts, distressing flashbacks, behavioral and psychological avoidance, and physiological hyperarousal symptoms and hypervigilance. 71% of the people admitted that it breaks the trust, and 48% said the trust couldn’t be restored.
