A man (u/formalrecognition467) has found himself in a humiliating gut-punch scenario, especially after he scaled his efforts to be with the woman of his dreams. He left home and moved 5,000 miles to end their long-distance relationship, unaware his girlfriend had grown dangerously close to her “work husband.” He initially trusted his girlfriend blindly and never questioned her equation with her office buddy, until he bumped into her friend at a grocery store. The story, shared on October 10, 2026, has received over 15,000 upvotes.

A shattered dream

The couple was in a long-distance relationship for 6 months before he moved in with her. After waiting for a visa, he gave up everything in his country and travelled 5,000 miles for her. The man trusted his girlfriend so much that he never suspected her relationship with her "work husband." Within the next two years, however, their relationship hit a rough patch. "For the past few months, every conversation turned into an argument; we were past the point of repair, and it was over," the man explained.

The shocking revelation

In his post, he also recounted his girlfriend's work husband following her to her new job. He also recalled how she left him out at a school friend's wedding. "She managed to get one of her girlfriends to bring him as her +1; I barely saw her all night," the man added. The man ignored every red flag until he bumped into one of her friends at the grocery store. "She shared that the work husband was soft-launched last weekend. I guess it always was the work husband," he explained. The author explained he's now considering going back to his own county.

Work spouse drama

A survey of 1,073 by SHRM found that over a third of U.S. workers (34%) have a “work spouse.” This refers to a coworker or business associate with whom one shares a close relationship, similar to the intimacy of a marriage. Like what happened in the case of the man’s girlfriend, over 2 in 5 (43%) respondents reported having feelings for their “work spouse.” Similarly, 45% said they feel like they have to hide their relationship with their “work spouse” from their significant other.

'Report them to HR'

Meanwhile, reacting to the Reddit post, u/montrerai commented, “I find it really gross and disrespectful when people with partners say they have a work husband or work wife.” u/Main_cauliflower5479 said, “I don't understand why she was pursuing a relationship with you if she was actually involved with this ‘work husband’ and had you move to her country? This just makes no sense at all.”
