The man is one of around 80 Serbian students currently cycling from Novi Sad, Serbia, to Strasbourg, France. Their 1,300-kilometer route began in early April 2025 and has taken them through multiple cities, including Vienna, where members of the Serbian diaspora turned out to support them. The ride is a protest and outreach effort organized in response to months of unrest in Serbia. The movement began after part of a newly renovated train station canopy collapsed in Novi Sad on November 1, 2024, killing 16 people, per France 24. The project had been promoted as a success but was later linked to corruption and poor oversight. When students organized a memorial for the victims, they were attacked. No one was arrested.

Since then, university buildings across Serbia have been occupied by students demanding full transparency on the train project, the arrest of those responsible for the attacks, the dismissal of charges against demonstrators and a 20% increase in university funding. The movement is decentralized, funded through public donations and coordinated through student plenums. To push back against negative portrayals in state-run media, many students began walking or cycling across the country to talk directly with people in smaller towns. The ride to Strasbourg is part of that effort. Students want their message to reach European institutions.

In recent months, their protests have contributed to the resignation of three ministers, the Mayor of Novi Sad, Milan Djuric, and even the Serbian Prime Minister, Milos Vucevic, per POLITICO.
