'I don’t want to get in the way of the family affairs,' he said
Every couple has their own timeline, but how soon is too soon to introduce someone to your family? In a now-deleted post, u/FatalFury624 shared that he canceled a first date with a woman he really liked because of her family. The author and the woman met at a beach bar, and despite their age difference, he was drawn to her. After months of talking and intimate conversations, they planned a dinner date, then a drive to a metal concert. Two days before the date, the author checked in, only to realize he did not want to go anymore. The original Reddit post shared October 15, 2026 got 2,000 upvotes and 160 comments, and was reshared later on Daily Dot.
AITAH for Canceling a First Date because She Invited Half of Her Family?

The author and the woman were supposed to go on a date on October 16. They had agreed on dinner, and then an-hour long drive up north to see a metal show. Two days before the date, he checked in to confirm they were still on. When he brought it up, she revealed that her brother and his girlfriend, her other brother, her sister, and her nephew were going to join them. The author thought it was strange because the date was supposed to be just the two of them. More importantly, this was supposed to be their first date.

The author responded by telling the woman, "That’s fine. Go with your family. I don’t want to get in the way of the family affairs." He believed meeting her family on a first date would be too overwhelming, and it steered too far from the original plans they made a month ago. He admitted that he was disappointed, but not angry. He assumed the woman would be disappointed too, and would probably think he was weird for canceling last minute. "I just wonder if I didn’t hit her up this evening whether she would’ve even told me before I went to go and see her," he concluded.

People follow their own rules when it comes to relationships, but there are certain things that are just big no-nos, like meeting relatives. A YouGov survey found that 72% of Britons considered meeting a date’s relatives — or having a date meet theirs — on a first date unacceptable, while only 17% said it was acceptable. Even more tellingly, 35% called it "totally unacceptable." A 2025 Tawkify survey found that 39% of respondents believe a couple should date for at least six months before bringing someone home. One in 10 said that one month is good enough before introducing them to family.

Netizens were quick to defend the author, assuring him that he was not the "weird" one for canceling the date. u/Ok_Management4634 commented, "NTA. She's not interested in you. A woman that is actually interested in you would not bring five guests to a first date. She was hoping you'd pay for the entire family. Don't waste time talking to her anymore." u/GvRiva added, "Now you know why it took a month to schedule a date. It's not that easy to coordinate with so many people. NTA, but a funny story."
