The 'Blade Runner' celebrity wasn't doing great in college; in fact, he felt lonely, until a bunch of creative people pushed him towards storytelling

Harrison Ford, the "Star Wars" (1977) hero, received a lifetime achievement award on Sunday, March 1. The 83-year-old actor broke down at the 2026 Actor Awards as he received the prestigious honor from his friend and actor Woody Harrelson. In his acceptance speech, he remembered people who've had the greatest impact on his career and life, including a bunch of "misfits and geeks" who introduced him to acting.
Ford admitted he wasn't doing great in college; in fact, he constantly felt lonely and isolated, and the anxiety of being a failure had drained him emotionally. However, that changed in his third year of college, when he met a group of people he once judged for being passionate about storytelling. "People I once thought were misfits and geeks turned out to be my people," the "Blade Runner" actor confessed. Ford, who until then had no plans of acting, suddenly found himself wanting to know more about the craft. He said he found a "calling" and a life in storytelling and instantly knew that's what he would enjoy doing for the rest of his life. "I am indeed a lucky guy — lucky to have found my people, lucky to have work that challenges me, lucky to still be doing it, and I don't take that for granted," Ford added.

Having been in showbiz for decades, Ford has seen it all — success, stardom, and everything that comes with the glamorous world. The actor, however, didn't achieve success overnight. He spent 15 years switching between carpentry and small acting gigs until "Star Wars" changed his life forever. "None of it happened on my own... Thank you, George Lucas; thank you, Steven Spielberg," Ford confessed. The actor also thanked his beautiful wife, Calista Flockhart, and his family for their love and encouragement throughout. The "Indiana Jones" star urged actors and everyone else in the business to always look out for opportunities to help each other. "Success in this business brings a certain freedom that comes with responsibility to support each other, to lift others up when we can, and to keep the door open for the next kid, the next lost boy who's looking for a place to belong," he added.
While consistent hard work and determination are important for success, a strong support system often makes the journey even more meaningful. This alone explains why Ford wanted to thank everyone who worked equally hard, prayed, and hoped for his success. Research by Stanford University found that people with strong community support are 76% more likely to achieve their goals than those without such backing, according to a report by Vorecol HRMS. Another study by Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health on individuals working towards similar fitness goals found a similar connection between success and a strong support system. It was revealed that people with close relationships and a great support system were 50% more likely to experience higher life satisfaction. It explains why Ford was emotional receiving the lifetime achievement award.
