'I'm really happy that he’s my father.'
There isn't anything more rewarding for a father than seeing his kids smile, and a dad from Pittsburgh, Ricky Smith, understands that like no one else. His teen daughter, Nevaeha Smith, fell in love with a gorgeous dress that she wanted to wear to her school dance, but the outfit was so expensive that she thought she would have to let go of her dream. But little did she know, her daddy-dearest had other plans.
Nevaeha Smith, then 14, had recently graduated from Ringgold Middle School in Monongahela, Pennsylvania. The 8th-grader saw a dress and thought she had found the perfect attire, priced at $200, for her school dance, but first, she decided to ask her parents if the outfit fit in their budget. I said, 'Mom, Dad, I want this dress. Is it in our price range?" she asked, according to ABC News. Ricky, Nevaeha's father, who was already having a tough time providing for the family, said, "I looked at the price, and I was like, 'Uh, not really sure, but I can see what I can do.'"
Juggling between shifts at McDonald's, Popeye's, and Circle K convenience store, Ricky was determined to provide his daughter with something she wanted. After working extra shifts, the father finally arranged the money for his daughter and surprised her with the dress she fell for. In the video, Nevaeha was casually sitting at a store when her father arrived holding a garment bag. She was confused; she had no idea what was inside until Ricky disclosed his not-so-little surprise.
Nevaeha kept looking at the dress in disbelief and gently pushed it away to hug her father. The teenager couldn't believe her eyes, and the thought of her father working hard to fulfill her dream overwhelmed her. Nevaeha, still in her daddy's arms, kept wailing. At this time, she had almost forgotten about the dress, and her entire focus was on Ricky, her dad, who had given her the biggest surprise.
The teenager got a major shock, primarily because she had expected her father to arrange an old lady's dress for her. "My heart felt like there was more love in it than there was before. I love him, and I’m really happy that he’s my father," she said. Meanwhile, the tear-jerking video, when shared on the r/mademesmile subreddit, received an outpouring of love on the platform, with people praising the father-daughter duo. Reacting to the video, u/noproblem_mom commented, "The kid hugged first instead of taking it. Love both of them. I hope and wish that people don’t have to work 3 jobs to give simple pleasures to their kids. Loved everything in the video. Wish you both lots of happiness."
u/peanutiron wrote, "Aside from the fact that he should be paid more and not have to work 3 jobs to pay for things, just look at the smile on his face when she hugs him. As a dad, nothing feels better than this." u/stranger0nreddit commented, "This is a top-notch dad. He cares, he’s invested, and he gets it. I don’t think my dad would have even known I went to a school dance if my mom didn’t force him to look at the pics from it. And even then, he would have forgotten within a few days. That guy just didn’t give a sh**."
