The negligent customer was rude, but the hairdresser had a smart way of making her pay her dues.
While workers in the service sector are committed to treating customers with fairness and respect, customers are similarly expected to treat service employees well. Being a client doesn't justify disrespectful behavior toward those providing services. Clients cannot denigrate or treat employees poorly simply because they render services for them. u/plueschlieselchen shared a troubling encounter she witnessed at her hair salon involving a rude customer and a salon employee. She mentioned that she was a regular client at the salon and that they were known for their exceptional service in the city.
“A couple of weeks ago, I was at the salon again getting my extensions fixed. My hairdresser (a super lovely woman) told me that she’s in a bit of a bad mood since a customer did not show up for her appointment earlier that day without canceling,” she said. The woman further explained that the hairdresser was upset because doing extensions takes a lot of time and the salon had made quite a loss due to the negligence of the other customer. “She also told me that the customer is ‘a bit difficult,’ at times. I understood how much of an understatement that was when said customer showed up, apparently 4 hours later and demanded to be served,” the woman recalled.
The woman recounted the exchange, noting, “The owner of the salon told her that they can’t do her hair since the slots for the rest of the day are booked. The woman then started aggressively rambling about ‘bad customer service’ and how they should ‘show some flexibility.’” The woman herself was done with the careless customer, but the hairdresser agreed to get her hair done. “She sat down in the chair next to me and proceeded to start b***hing about how the last time they did her hair wrong, how the quality of the hair was shit, the color was off (it wasn’t) and so on,” she recalled.
The woman was perplexed as to why the salon tolerated such 'verbal abuse' from the customer. “After a while, she decided that she needed to take a smoking break and went outside for a bit. So I asked the salon owner. I was like, ‘Dude - why the hell do you not throw her out?’” the woman mentioned. The hairdresser shrewdly grinned and shared the most hilarious reply. “He just keeps grinning at me and says, ‘Oh - it’s fine. I regularly charge her 2 times the actual rate for the hair and service. I call it the B**ch tax.’”
The woman was satisfied that the ignorant customer got her dues without knowing it. However, while most people agreed that she deserved nothing less, others believed it was unfair to have such a response. u/witchling22 said, “That must have been glorious to see in person.” u/ItsMissiBeaches wrote, “This could only have been better if the manager then called all the other salons in town and had her blacklisted.” u/CaptainDunbar45 remarked, “Sometimes I want to call out rude customers too, but you never know how much worse it will make it for everyone.”
